it took me awhile to fully comprehend the stupidity of that statement.

I mean, what the hell is his definition of "advance black music"?

Muthafuck him and John Wayne.

Dude went on to post this:

Michael Jackson is the greatest black performer in history (at least popularity wise, I myself prefer the jazz greats like Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and many others)

Michael Jackson idolized Elvis Presley, copied his dance moves, married his girl, called himself the king of pop (imitating the king of rock and roll). Elvis opened the doors to performers like MJ, saying he stole black music and culture is not right. Elvis loved and was inspired by black music and always gave credit to his black brothers and sisters. If you ever saw the gospel portion of his TV special, you would understand.

Elvis stole nothing, quite the opposite, he opened doors to black performers who had been shut out by racism.

This came up when I was trolling an old white dude by saying dumb shit like "lol Jay-Z > Elvis eat a dick"...except he took the shit pretty serious by mentioning Elvis's numbers and then making that statement you see quoted in the title.

H-rap, I might have to re-examine my criticism of you using the phrase "white devil"...

What site were you on?

It would be ignorant to deny his influence on black music but to say he did more than anyone else is definitely a stretch.

white folks, elvis included, have been stealing black music and culture since slavery. that is a fact. the elvis argument is moot at this point in history.

LOL, that's complete bullshit.....Louis Armstrong arguably did more than anyone to advance black music, considering how jazz was the first form of black music to get nationwide attention. He did not advance black culture much though, since he did act weird at times and was hated by many blacks during his time alive. Elvis did make rock and roll (created by a Black man, Ike Turner) popular, I give him that. But advancing black culture more than any other man? FOH, I don't see anyone following Elvis nowadays. The ones who are imitated the MOST have advanced black culture the most, so 2pac, James Brown, and Michael Jackson get more props from me than Elvis.

Who dances or sings like Elvis in the black community now?? I don't see anyone doing that as far as I see.

Yep, he's sold more records than any other black artist behind Michael Jackson, but his influence on Black music is minimal at best. I highly doubt Usher imitates Elvis.....he's imitating the great Black legends, like James Brown and Michael Jackson. Kanye West isn't imitating Elvis......Eminem might, but that's to be expected.....2pac damn sure wasn't influenced by no motherfuckin Elvis. Biggie I doubt was....I can go on and on. I'm not hatin on him, but let's keep it real, Elvis has had little to no impact on Black music overall. Anita Baker is more influential in the Black community than Elvis.

Dance steps? Are you serious? That one two dance by numbers shit he was doing? MJ, JB, The Rock Steady Crew, shit on Elvis.

Hell, MC Serch dance better than that dude.

All Elvis did was make white people proud after Pat Boone flopped after stealing Little Richards shit. Finally a white dude with flavor.

Before Elvis Presley sang "Hound Dog," Big Mama Thornton had house-trained that canine. Before Bill Haley & the Comets popularized "Shake, Rattle & Roll," Big Joe Turner had done all three. The Crewcut's "Sh-Boom" was originally sung by The Chords, and The Beatles' "Roll Over Beethoven" was rocked by Chuck Berry well before the boys from Liverpool "invaded" America.

It continues to be the biggest lie in the music industry - that Whites created rock `n' roll. From history books to rock-oriented cafes, from the pretentious Graceland mansion to the corner record store, White rock `n' roll artists have been immortalized and credited with creating the multibillion-dollar rock music industry.

Lost is the reality that rock `n' roll was actually born out of the belly of Black blues music and raised by Black artists in the 1950s in smoke-filled clubs along Beale Street in Memphis, 47th Street in Chicago and 125th Street in Harlem. Only years later, when White teenagers began openly digging the electric guitars and the pounding drum beats that Black artists were playing - a sound their parents had disparagingly labeled "race" and "rhythm and blues" music - did White disc jockey Alan Freed re-name it "rock `n' roll," and White artists entered the lucrative field without stigma.

And when they did, they didn't revolutionize the music. Lacking creativity, many White artists "covered" songs Blacks had written years earlier and made it big by copying the performing styles, dances and dress of Black artists like Little Richard, who even today can't believe how he and other Black artists were ripped off.

rofl, I didn't notice the inherent hilarity of this scenario when I first read this thread

Most history would have you believe that rock n roll as we know it was a merger or the music played by artists like Chuck Berry/Little Richard and "country" that Elvis and the like played. Its utter bullshit. Like some other posters have said, its not a hybrid artform if the latter artists were playing the EXACT same songs and just adding white "flavor" to it. Frankly, beyond that debate I just never saw the hype in Elvis. He was basically a reverse Eminem in that it seemed from how his career played out he was almost groomed to be a star without the actual talent and base development of artists at the time. The notion of him being the King of Rock is an insult to an artist like Chuck Berry, who made amazing music and was truly a pioneer and not just a follower and imitator.
