Definitely. How can you claim to be the best when you can't even freestyle? That tells me right there, you don't really respect the artform.

One reason I respect Common so much:

How many of these rappers can DJ, Break Dance, Beatbox or do Graffiti? Does this mean the ones that can not, don't respect the culture as a whole?

I'm not saying you have to represent every tenet of hip-hop but if you're a rapper and you can't even freestyle then IMO you do not respect the culture. Specifically mc'ing.

I hate to break it to ya'll...but alot of "freestyles" from rappers are just memorized rhymes...that's what rappers do...they write, it's their job...most rappers will tell you they have shit memorized for times when people say "Freestyle right now"...

^^^ Thought this was common knowledge. If someone who is otherwise unknown to spit off the top and they are flowing seamlessly, its a written. Freestyle's a very loose term these days.

Its not too hard to tell the difference between a crafted rhyme or improvisation. Some dudes go far enough to switch between the two for the illusion, but your average fan doesn't even really care either way.

Hey depends on ya God given talent. Some cats can freestyle their ass off but can't write a decent song to save their life. That's like saying you're not a top bball player if u can't dunk. Give me a pen and a pad and i'll rap circles around cats, but my freestyle depends on the zone i'm in, shit can be amazing at times in the right mood.

Lets worry about making good music first

An artist first point of interest should not be based on whether or not they can "freestyle" well or not

A career built from that alone will bust, ask Cassidy

I hate when rappers "freestyle" and then you hear it on their album the next week when it comes out. Kanye did this on a radio freestyle with Pusha just before MBDTF came out. I read somewhere that his freestyle on Ice T's documentary was from MBDTF as well

I thought Kanye was freeestying at the BET awards, I was like "dang this nicca going in". Then I heard New God Flow 4 the 1st time the next day. Rappers lose points with me when it comes to not being able to freestyle tho

Show & prove.... U ain't gotta be the best but I think every emcee should have the capability to go off the top on any subject matter or topic given, no of that pre -written memorized bullshit or pullin out notes & blackberrys in the middle of the cypher.....

Ole cliff notes ass niggas

Even for the best Freestyler they havebtheir off days and ppl aren't understanding anymore so why risk losing a potential fan tryin to "Freestyle" when u can let ppl hear ur best stuff...

IMO freeatyling is overrated because ppl will let a wack verse slid because its "off the dome"

Freestyling is a very important element for the artist to develop so they'll have their own style instead of trying to mimic the next man's shit.

It helps build cadence, thought process and rhyme pattern. Every written song starts off as a freestyle anyway, it just some can adapt to paper and pen (or currently a Blackberry) more than others.
