Definitely. How can you claim to be the best when you can't even freestyle? That tells me right there, you don't really respect the artform.

One reason I respect Common so much:

You aint gotta be the nicest at it and killing everybody, but hell yeah you should be able to freestyle. That's part of being an MC, imo. But I am a lot older than most of yall and that's the hip hop culture I came up in.

If niggas can freestyle they do not do it any more. Niggas stay spitten writtens the art of the freestyle is dead. Also I believe the word freestyle needs to be redefined or we need a term to describe spitten writtens. IMO, as long as the rhymes are dope I am cool weather it be freestyle or written.

You lose a little but I'm never gonna stop listening to a dope rapper because he does his "freestyles" off a phone.

If someones pen game is nice enough, it doesn't matter much to me. They should be able to come up with a few bars off the top tho, if they can't I might question whether or not they have ghostwriters.

Writing means more to me. Freestyling is always a positive but its not mandatory for a great MC. There aren't going to be many instances where freestyling will help.

it depends...

If a rapper can freestyle, then they get points for that.

The cypher is the purist form of hip-hop.

It doesn't take anything away from a rapper who has good pen game.

Yeah..freestyle is the foundation, well it should be for every m.c.

You have to first earn ur stripes in a cypher amongst ur peers..every m.c. that i know of personally started off as a freestyler and developed from there..

Wen i used to spit, i would freestyle to a track to get my delivery then once i felt the flow and timing was right, then i would write to the track according to how i feel it should be delivered..

The freestyle wouldnt make sense but it sounded good to niggas listening to it..if niggas responded positively to the bullshit rhymes but on point flow, thats the style i would use wen i write to the track..

I viewed my freestyles as a blueprint for the overall constrution of the music i was making at the time..

Cassidy probably got bars off the top

How many of these rappers can DJ, Break Dance, Beatbox or do Graffiti? Does this mean the ones that can not, don't respect the culture as a whole?

looking at it from the opposite angle niggas who are dope freestylers but can't make a flowing album of songs looses hella points. There are people who can freestyle pretty good but they cant make a song for shit or can only make mixtape quality freestyles. Case in point is allot of good battle rappers in these recent leagues in the last decade that have some dope off the top lines or slightly written slightly freestyled comebacks that suck at making songs.
