Was just checking out some Jazzy Jeff sets and found this, daum what a dope routine... I think really could be the GOAT DJ and the king of the transformer scratch... @5grand didnt Jeff invent the transformer scratch???

Some say DJ Spinbad, some say DJ Cash Money and some say Jazzy Jeff. One thing that nobody disputes that it did start in Philly. Philly has always had some of the best DJ's. They need to get more credit for that. Jazzy is the Goat imo tho.

Don't even get me started on Serato. The game done changed.

I also think Philly HIP HOP in general is underrated when talking about the early years of hip hop, but Philly had some real dope MC's, groups and IMO the best DJ's!!!

Yo check out this article:

was listening to some old NYC heads...they said when Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince started coming up to nYC to perform..no one gave a shit bout Will s raps, it was Jazzy Jeff who held it down on the turntables that really got the crowd hype

I think that was often the way back in the day, like the DJ was star and the MC was just there to back up the DJ by spitting a few words over the beat... I may be wrong, but you could say New York had better MCs and Philly had better DJs???

Its a shame, in a way the DJ doesnt get enough probs these days... Like how many rap crews are there out with a DJ being a focal point or just important???

Also of the time groups dont even have constant DJ these days, they pick a DJ to go on tour with them or do a show, then they may change it up and have a different DJ the next show...

Thinking about it, how dope and refreshing would it be if a rap duo consisting of just an MC & a DJ came around now!?!

Will has admitted this as well. I'm pretty sure it was in Rap City interview.

Yeah I didnt say he was the first DJ from Philly (obviously not), I just wasnt sure if he invented the transformer scratch, like @BarryHalls pointed out Cash Money seems to of been the first but he did invent the 'chirp'... I believe Jeff was the first to put a transformer scratch on a record though???

Actually the first song with a transformer scratch was a song by Steady B called Bring The Beat Back. The DJ was Grand Dragon KD. It came out in 1986.

Bring The Beat Back - Steady B

But Jazzy Jeff actually premiered the Transformer scratch in Union Square in November 1986. The routine was called Live @ Union Square and was later added to his I'm The DJ He's The Rapper album which came out in 1988.

But Fresh Prince named it the "Transformer Scratch" in a song called The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff on their first album which came out in 1987.

The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff - DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince

Another song worth mentioning is Use Me by Steady B. It came out in the fall of 1987. This might be some of the best scratching I've ever heard. The DJ was Tat Money.

Use Me - Steady B

So basically Grand Wizard Rasheen was the first Philly DJ and he taught Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money. Steady B had two DJs, Grand Dragon KD and Tat Money. Jazzy Jeff, Grand Dragon KD and Tat Money were the first DJs to transform on wax. Cash Money came a year later. There's a handful of Philly DJs that I named in my other post that were around at that time but for whatever reason they never made records.

For the record (no pun intended) They had a DJ contest in the New Music Seminar. The first year DJ Cheese from New Jersey won but the next 3 years were won by Philly DJs

New Music Seminar DJ Champions

1985 - DJ Cheese (New Jersey)

1986 - Dj Jazzy Jeff (Philly)

1987 - DJ Cash Money (Philly)

1988 - DJ Miz (Philly)

Yeah it wasn't in the Bassment, it was shot on location in an actual recording studio while they were working on some stuff. Around the Men in Black II era. Though I can't recall if Joe Clair or Tigger did the interview.

Dope drop @5grand... So Jeff dropped the transformer scratch the same time year as 'GD KD', but a few months after... I thought the common consensus was Jeff was the first, but clearly not... Some say Jeff was also the first to drop a sample on a record too...

“A lot of people don’t know, which is bad, I was the first person to let somebody else’s record go on mine [on ‘The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff’],” he explained. “Like everybody would just scratch, at the end of the record, you remember, I let [James Brown’s] ‘The Funky Drummer’ go…I fucked it up for everybody. [Afrika] Bambaattaa came up and told me, ‘You know what? You’re the first person to ever sample,’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ [He said,] ‘I couldn’t believe you let ‘Funky Drummer’ go at the end of ‘The Magnificent.’ I was like, yo, you’ve got balls.’ I was like ‘I didn’t know it was illegal!'”

Im sure you can find an earlier example though??? haha
