Gabrielle Union on Birth of A Nation " I support you if you don't want to see the film"

If the reception to Birth of a Nation at the box office hasn't been quite what its creators hoped for, Gabrielle Union says she doesn't fault those who are choosing to boycott the film over Nate Parker's rape scandal. (The film's director and star was accused of raping a classmate at Penn State in 1999, but was acquitted of all charges.) In her new Essence cover story, Union explains why she's standing by anyone who sits the film out. "As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult," Union writes. "I don’t want to put myself above anyone’s pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you. I support you if you don’t want to see the film. I absolutely understand and respect that. I can’t sell the film."

Union, whose silent role in the film includes a controversial rape scene, previously spoke out about Parker's allegations in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, expressing the hope that the resurfaced allegations would spark a larger conversation on rape culture. Now, in Essence, she says that much of the film's female cast is united on the issue: "We are okay if you have to sit this one out, and we’re okay if you don’t.”

For everyone thinking it's White people trying to destroy this movie..... the stars of the movie are even trying to separate themselves from Nate Parker.

But he did nothing wrong right???!?!

Lsa is really exposing black females in this ongoing gender war. Black females been showing they ass for a minute now. They aren't thinking about the end game at all.

I went to see it last night, it was a great film. The only thing i didn't really vibe with was how white women were portrayed as bystanders of the antebellum south. That they didn't have any skin in the game and had their own nefarious shit they were up to.

Besides some scenes at the end. I didn't like how they made white women out to be "nice" to black people. That was complete bullshit.

Cosign

While white women suffered under the weight of the same patriarchal authority to which slaves were subjected

Just think of how the son inherited his father's property and the plantation after his death...though his mother was still alive and well

White women still had the freedom to vent their fury, albeit on the only people to whom they were superior... Blk ppl

And even with BoN it bothered me a lot seeing white woman seperate young Nat from his mother...only so she could teach him how to parrot the bible and parade him around like a well behaved dog

But yea I think 12 years a slave did a better job showing how white women we rent just bystanders but complicit participants

How did white women "suffer?" You gotta explain that. @desertrain10

Obviously their suffering does not compare to what we have faced...but white women had to answer to white patriarchal authority as slaves during that time

They couldn't vote, because they were thought to be lesser than

They had very little economic prospects

Made less than men

No legal recourse if their husbands were physically abusive

White women were not slaves, they were a protected class. Let's break down what a slave is. A slave is a human being whose labor is forcibly extracted for little or no compensation for the benefit of a dominant house or society.

White women economic prospects are tied to the economic prospects of their men, their husbands and their sons. They are the beneficiaries of white capitalism without having to put in the work. The reason being is because white women are the sole facilitators of white patriarchy.

For all the shit you throw at the concept of patriarchy, the society with the strongest patriarchy will have the most protected women. It has been established by white society that if you even breathe at a white girl in the wrong way the full force of white patriarchy will come to seek recompense.

In the Black community, that is sans patriarchy you can do damn near anything you want to a Black female: beat them, rape them, abuse them, exploit them, discard them when you done with them. That has also been long established by white patriarchy.

Birth of a Nation established this paradigm. Nat picks up a toy that a white woman's child dropped, handed it back to the mother and is beaten and bout to be charged with assault by a white man. Nat's wife is gang raped and beaten by white men, just cuz. and they don;t even call that shit rape just par for the course. Aint no callin the sheriff. The sheriff is nothing but an authorized agent of a patriarchy selected to keep the "peace" the dominant society has established.

No patriarchy=no law. No law means you don't have the security that you want as a woman. Black women are neither going to establish order or enforce law, for an example I direct you to your nearest Black community.

@desertrain10

The blk community doesn't live, exist in a vacuum

Since slavery, we too are members of a society where white males are at the top of the social hierarchy...Blk women being at the bottom of the totem pole

Law enforcement being a branch of partichical white authority

A blk woman was raped during those times she couldn't call the sheriff because she was a black first and a woman second

Subsequently many Blk women lived under the threat of rape and abuse, regardless of whether it came from white men or blk men

White men obviously being the greater threat

And though our experiences differ greatly, that scene you alluded to does a great job of illustrating how white women had very little agency in comparison to their white male counterparts

While they enjoyed protections Blk men and women did not, they still had to answer to their white husbands and fathers. And were regularly subjected to the violent ways of their husbands and father

They couldn't just leave because women had limited economic opportunities at the time

And voting initially was tied to property ownership in America. The popular sentiment they were the only voices that mattered. As time progressed though it varied state to state, white males were the only group that could freely vote

They justified this injustice with junk science that insiduated or outright suggested women and blks were less intelligent, had smaller brains

@desertrain10

Why do you care so much for white women who probably don't care about you either way?

so acknowledging that women, including white women, suffer under the weight of white patriarchal authority = me caring so much for white women

smh...

how sway???? lol

you gotta come better than that bruh

@desertrain10

4o9qgqq6edgd.gif

Stop playing dumb.

You're smart enough to know exactly what I meant.

no....

i 'm honestly not

break it down for me

Just seems like you're going out or your way to highlight the hardships of people who don't care about you either way.......and who directly benefited from the oppression of your people.

It doesn't make sense to do that for people who wouldn't do the same for you.

so me acknowledging that women, including white women, suffer under the weight of white patriarchal authority = me going out my way?????

I also acknowledged that white women participated in the oppression of my ppl....

Doesn't make the aforementioned any less true

My gripe initially was that I thought BoN live many slave narrators weren't hard enough on white women lol

Kick rocks bruh

You have yet to give an example of white women suffering under white men.

so there was no women's suffrage movement

never in this country did women face discrimination in the labor market and banking industry

sexism never existed

I'm just making this shit up....ok....

let's agree to disagree

@desertrain10

Why do you care so much about the hardships of your oppressor?

Lol

So let's continue to take my comments out of context... right

Forgot the IC is not a great place to have nuanced, intelligent debate

Again, I believe BoN was a critique of the white patrirachal power structure. Subsequently Nate didnt do a great job depicting white women as the evil cunts they were

Thought he let em off easy

*shrugs*

Now run along ...ur no good at this...

I don't think it's fair to say that a patriarchy automatically means the subjugation of women. It is hard for women to obtain top levels of power, but that doesn't mean women are property or without value. A lot of older African cultures were patriarchies, but women still had important roles and power within the community. Just because you give one party the lead doesn't mean all other parties become slaves.

If men are the gatekeepers of respectability...the law makers so they shape public policy ...business leaders...etc

Men are basically in control of every aspect of our lives, soceity

You don't find that problematic?

Just look at history...

Or look at how women are treated in starch patriarchal societies across the world

And as I was saying patriarchy breeds misogyny

You're basically saying that patriarchies must be male dictatorships, but that's not true. Just because men are the leaders doesn't mean that women don't get a say so. I'm the head of my household, but my wife still has input on what happens. It's not like I hit her with the "My way or the highway" line on a daily basis. Just like all slavery wasn't the same as the chattel slavery used in America, not all patriarchies are the same as what we see in America. Again, many precolonial African societies were technically patriarchies, but women were given special roles and held their own power.

This is one reason why it was silly for black women to jump on the feminism bandwagon in the way that white women did, because the relationships between men and women in the black community were not the same as between men and women in the white community.

Aint that some nerve? And you got people in this thread who wanna psychoanalyze black women who "cape for white women" who would never stand up for them, but they don't wanna psychoanalyze what type of issues you have to have to go marry a white woman after going through a whole trial being accused of rape. Who the fuck does that? He has issues. How does he look at his own face in the mirror? I could give 2 shits about white women and their accusations when it comes to black men, black women, or black children. I could name a dozen black men I still supported after being accused by white women. Aint nobody stop me from liking Bill Cosby. I aint gotta like Nate Parker. You could steal a crayon from a white person in kindergarten, they'll use it as leverage for why they hate black people 50 years later. They dont need much at all. This goofball gets accused of rape,, could have spent 30 years in jail, has his reputation ruined, and finds the first white woman to marry. Stupmo!

It's wierd because if a white woman accused me of rape and I was found not guilty ,I would not socialize with white women or marry a white woman,I would keep my distance from them.

In theory that makes sense. In reality in most cases shit don't work that way.

A black man gets accused of a crime by another black man gets found not guilty. Should that black man now not ever socialize with other black men again?

I get and respect what you saying and don't agree with that move that Nate Parker made in who he chose to marry but for most people shit ain't going to break down that way.
