So below is a video by some white girl (Nicole arbour- have no idea who she is). Apparently she's got fans tho.

Anyway one of my closest friends (a white girl from Latvia) liked this video, and left a positive comment on it... Claiming she was funny. Now I watched the video, and I actually was offended, only thing I found funny was her dead Jamaican accent. I'm just wondering what your guys thoughts are on this before I go in on my friend... Cus she isn't racist as far as I know, and I'm wondering if maybe I'm overreacting

Your friend is subconsciously racist

You need to check her

The reason why I brought this to the IC... I genuinely think she is, or maybe not racist but I do think she is oblivious to race struggles... We've had a few conversations where she has displayed her ignorance, but sometimes I think it does come down to out right ignorance... I will check her tho... But not on no beef thing

I can almost guarantee the bolded - which is not surprising, given her demographic.

That's where you come in ...

Regarding the video - I see where she was going. She took it a few places that were extremely insensitive and demonstrated her ignorance on the subject of black people; our current realities, and our history in America.

It could be taken as offensive, funny, both, or neither ... depending on the audience.

Which is like most humor, if we're being completely honest.

The difference here is the subject matter.

But its not like Black Comedians censor themselves when it comes to sensitive topics.

Its un-apologetically funny when they talk about

  • midgets
  • white people
  • the disabled
  • homosexual etc.

Excluding where it was grossly distasteful and incendiary, I dont see how this differs from content put out by most comedians.

I dont think the woman in the video is racist... just not very funny, insensitive to certain topics, and oblivious to systemic racial issues.

The same can probably be said of your friend, to a lesser extent.

She say something like "you don't want us to use the n word please stop using it in rap songs"

Now I do somewhat agree with that statement....I think the use of nigga/nigger is way to rampant in music however a white person should never be able to make that request

That logic is inherently flawed and based on them setting the parameters of the conversation. When you play their game by their rules they set and change at will, of course you'll lose. You have to look beyond that.

"-insert race here- won't stop saying the n word, until black people stop saying the n-word"

Well....that gives weight to idiotic statements like

"-insert race here- won't stop raping white women, until white men stop raping white women"

"-insert race here- won't stop molesting white babies, until white people stop molesting their own babies"

"-insert race here- cops won't stop shooting unarmed white criminals, until white cops stop shooting unarmed white criminals"

"-insert race here- won't stop robbing white people, until white people stop robbing white people"

It boils down to "We won't stop doing' it until you stop doing it to yourselves......because we have no self control..u shouldn't show it to me, what do u expect?".

It's a bullshit way to get the target to blame themselves, while taking no accountability.

i mean ill be honest..

if i white comedian wants to make jokes about black people...or any other race for that matter, if its funny and not overtly racist i will have no problem with it... the same way i have no problem with chappelle, rock, eddie, etc cracking joke on white people. That being said when i see a black comedian running jokes on whites, just becaise thats the "thing to do" and to get some easy laughs, i lose respect for them as a comedian... for me it goes both ways, its just a case of there arent many non-black comedians that are brave enough or skilled enough to crack joke on black people.

in this case however, my problems are:

- she seems like she is acting like she truely understands the struggle of black people, when clearly she doesnt

- she is very fucking smug with her supposed knowledge of black peoples struggles "oh you thought i were going somewhere else with that"...yes the majority of us did....then she turns around and calls us racist cus we thought that...yeh we thought that cus you took a very very important matter to us "dont shoot" and made a joke of it.

- lol this motherfucker tried to liken black folk having pickles on hamburgers, or going to starbucks the same as white people trying to look black... yo i dont know any black person (or any person of any race) going to starbucks or eating pickles cus they wanna look white...but shiiiiit can i say the same about white girls getting butt implants, lip injections, tanning there fucking skin...fuck outta here

- the jerk chicken place? im sorry....did she mean the Caribbean restaurant? im sure when this bitch goes to mcdonalds she doesnt call it the disappointing burger place.

shit man....this is only 1minute and 20 seconds in

- already spoken about the "n word comment"

- she talking about whether Drake is a legit enough of a black man to say nigga.... seriously???????

2:27 in to the video and i cant be bothered to critique anymore....but yeh this video has pissed me the fuck off.

and fuck my homie... again i can only assume that when looking at this video she didnt see it the way i did, but god damn.. this is fucked up

although i do agree with you....and off topic from this thread, i do believe that hiphop artists need to think more about how they use the word nigga/nigger in their songs... i mean "niggas in paris" opened the door for white people to think its cool to start using that word, and ive seen more than a couple of videos of "popular" MCs telling the (white) crowds at their shows that its cool for them to say nigga at their shows (cant remember who of the top of my head though)
