Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue: Trump’s comments are ‘insulting and disgraceful’

Paul Tagliabue served as NFL commissioner from 1989 to 2006, and shared his perspective on President Trump’s flurry of criticism of the NFL and its players in an interview with Sports Illustrated on Sunday.

“For me, to single out any particular group of players and call them SOBs, to me that’s insulting and disgraceful,” Tagliabue told Sports Illustrated.” I think the players deserve the credit, they should get credit for what they do. And when it comes to speech, they’re entitled to speak, we’re entitled to listen, we’re entitled to disagree or agree, for that matter. But we’re not entitled to shut anybody’s speech down. Sometimes you don’t like what you hear, well that’s true of life in lots of contexts, but you can’t shut people down and you can’t be disgraceful when you’re doing it.”

Tagliabue’s comments were mostly in response to Trump’s assertion at a political rally in Alabama on Friday, in which he suggested that coaches should get the “son of a b—-” players off the field if they continued to kneel. Trump then doubled down on that statement in a tweet early Sunday morning

Tagliabue >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Goodell…

More player finally stepped up and now y'all complaining what took so long.

Just focus on the progress that's being made now.

Shit.

A lot of people seem to complain here. It's disappointing.

Although I would have liked to see every single black NFL player take a knee, I'm satisfied with the progress that was made today.

Black people better wake up because Trump's end goal is to start a race war and run this country as a totalitarian leader. Blacks are so distracted by bullshit reality shows and other nonsense, that they're missing what's happening and are gonna wake up wondering how the hell they're picking cotton again.

Steve Mnuchin: NFL Players Don’t Have the ‘Right For Free Speech’ on the Playing Field

Minutes after the first NFL game of the day started, showing multiple players kneeling during the national anthem following President Donald Trump’s continued attacks on pro athletes protesting, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin defended the president’s comments. And in doing so, pretty much claimed that NFL players don’t have the right to express free speech on the playing field.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Mnuchin told host Jake Tapper that because the NFL has different rules, and because of those rules, players shouldn’t be allowed to kneel during the Star Spangled Banner.

“You can’t have stickers on your helmet, you have to have your uniforms tucked in,” Mnuchin said. “What the president is saying — and I think the owners should meet, and they should vote on a rule — this is about respect for our military. This is about respect for our first responders.”

Mnuchin went on to hammer the point that this is about showing respect for the military and law enforcement while making the case that NFL players should only be allowed to express their opinions when not playing.

“Players have the right for free speech off the field,” he stated. “On the field, this is about respect for lots of people. and i don’t understand why there’s rules that when the Dallas Cowboys wanted to put stickers on their helmets out of respect for people there, they couldn’t do it, but now the NFL is saying people should be able to decide what they want to do and disrespect the United States flag.”

The smug rich white man says nfl players(i.e. black) don’t have the right to free speech oh and it’s not about race(unless whitey says so)

I mean I'm happy with more people showing out as well.. but you don't think it's a valid criticism of folks that lock arms or stay in the locker room rather than taking a stand/knee?

What exactly are you locking arms for.. or staying in the locker room for? If it's the very same reason that more courageous people are taking a knee for... then why not just take the knee with them?

Maria Bartiromo Rips NFL Anthem Kneelers on Fox & Friends: ‘I Think It’s Disgusting!’

FBN Morning show anchor Maria Bartiromo had the good fortune to make a promotional appearance on her sister channel’s Fox News morning show today, moments after a multitude of NFL players took a knee in protest in advance of an afternoon game taking place in London today. Fox & Friends Weekend co-host opened the segment by showing images of many players taking a knee, ostensibly in protest of racial inequality and likely in reaction to President Donald Trump‘s inflaming rhetoric.

So how did Ms. Bartiromo feel about these images? “I think it’s disgusting” she offered, adding “I don’t know what they are so upset about right now. I looked at these contract and they are making hundreds of millions of dollars. They than 150, $160 million contract over the coming years.”

The NFL Anthem protest started with Colin Kaepernick over a year ago an has become a more inflamed political debate with President Donald Trump‘s heated call for an NFL boycott in protest of the anthem kneelers.

Bartiromo appears to see this protest mostly in financial terms, saying “they will raise almost $5 billion from CBS, fox, all of the networks. Advertisers pay up for this kind of an audience. Guess what. Now because of these antics and shenanigans, advertisers are not going to pay it because the audience numbers are dropping. We have the lowest ratings in football in seven years. People literally stop watching the game because of this.”

If Ms. Bartiromo seems to truly believe that money is at the root of this protest then she has been willingly ignoring the core reasons for the protests.

Privileged white woman perspective...

It's funny when I see the linking arms. When was sports organizations unity under attack? Easy photo ops, easy way for owners to "support" black payers. Staying in the locker room? It's hiding, plain and simple. I feel like the owners had a part in that shit. So what? They gonna do this all year?

I'm glad players have the balls to finally take a knee so I'm not going to shit on them too much. Just remember who started it and why.

Now, how is CK's "baggage" relevant?

Pete Hegseth: Black Players Must Respect Anthem Because This Is 'Least Racist Country In History Of Humankind'

Fox News host Pete Hegseth on Sunday blasted professional athletes across the country for defending their fellow players' right to take a knee during the national anthem.

While speaking at a rally in Alabama on Friday night, President Donald Trump suggested that former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was a “son of a bitch” because he had refused to stand for the national anthem on the grounds that it celebrates slavery and is part of America's history of systemic racism.

"It's infected the NFL and the NBA and and now we see it happen in Major League Baseball," Hegseth opined. "Look at those 12 [NFL] teams immediately putting out a statement calling the president's statement divisive!"

The host continued: "I have to ask, what are we kneeling for at this point? Because you talk about social injustice, this is the least sexist, least racist, most free, most equal, most prosperous country in the history of humankind."

According to Hegseth, players who refuse to stand for the anthem -- and not Trump -- are guilty of taking "divisive action."

Smh.. These white supremacists are such bullshit artists...

DE Wolfe on protests: Worse places than U.S.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe said Sunday he believes players should stand for the national anthem but that protests are a "right'' and "to each their own.''

Wolfe sent a statement to ESPN's Josina Anderson that outlined why he stands for the anthem and why he believes others should as well. But Wolfe also addressed those who have kneeled or stood during the anthem and may in the future.

Wolfe's statement comes after comments during a weekend rally in Alabama from President Donald Trump that players who refuse to stand for the national anthem should be "fired" by NFL owners. The comments have drawn widespread reaction from NFL owners and players as well as commissioner Roger Goodell and former commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Wolfe's statement:

"I stand because I respect the men who died in real battles so I have the freedom to battle on the field. Paying tribute to the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom is why I stand. But everyone these days likes to find a reason to protest and that's their right. It's America and you are free to speak your mind. I just feel it's disrespectful to the ones who sacrificed their lives and it's the wrong platform. But like I said to each their own it's AMERICA! The greatest country in the world and if you don't think we are the greatest country in the world and you reside here, then why do you stay? A lot worse places in the world to call home. Proud to be an American.''

Wolfe has previously said he supported people's right to protest, including when linebacker Brandon Marshall knelt during the national anthem before eight games last season in part to protest the use of force by police. Wolfe also has consistently said he personally believes everyone should stand for the anthem.

The false narrative continues.. I didn’t realize the military and military dead owned the anthem and the flag...

Shit.

Its good they're stepping up. Its not good they only stepped up when the league was attacked and not just when Kaep is

Fuck it

Why Malcom and Martin took so long

Why Tubman didn't do shit quicker.

You niggas find the problem in everything. Players stated they are standing with Kaep. So that's all that should matter

That's the fucked up part. CK is King, CK is Tubman. CK took the heat and ultimately made the sacrifice. They don't need to stand with CK. They need to stand against police brutality and racism.

I give props to those that finally took action but I give even more respect to those Browns players that took a knee before trump gave everyone a safer reason to.
