Never heard of her and I was never taught about her school. It's good to see a black person getting this type of recognition from the country.

It's good for the black youth in this country. Hopefully it gets some of them to go and learn about black history in this country.

Viola Irene Desmond (July 6, 1914 – February 7, 1965) was a Black Nova Scotian businesswoman who challenged racial segregation at a film theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, in 1946. She refused to leave a whites-only area of the Roseland Theatre and was unjustly convicted of a minor tax violation used to enforce segregation. Desmond's case is one of the most publicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history and helped start the modern civil rights movement in Canada. Desmond acted nine years before the famed incident by civil-rights activist Rosa Parks, with whom Desmond is often compared. Desmond was granted a posthumous pardon, the first to be granted in Canada. The government of Nova Scotia also apologized for prosecuting her for tax evasion and acknowledged she was rightfully resisting racial discrimination. She will also be the first Canadian woman to be featured on a Canadian banknote, the $10 bill.

It's not an online PSA, it's televised and sponsored by the government. Heritage moments were pretty ubiquitous on television when I was growing up. They seem to be an effort to bring Canadians in diverse geographies closer together in our multicultural society.
