The owners are trying to take over the Goodell extension. Smh, NFL is in desperation mode right now.

Jerry Jones and 16 other NFL owners reportedly spoke on a conference call in an effort to find out whether they could "hijack" a contract extension for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, according to Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN.

"You don't get to have this many messes over the years like Roger has had and survive it," one owner said Thursday.

Added another owner: "Maybe Arthur [Blank, the head of the compensation committee] and that committee think they're on track. But they have a lot more resistance than they counted on—and maybe they don't know how the resistance is growing as we speak."

Goodell's tenure has certainly been controversial, from the league's handling of issues like CTE and domestic violence among its players to questions about the commissioner's broad authority over discipline and the latest debate about player protests against police brutality and racial discrimination during the national anthem.

As Mortensen and Schefter wrote, "there is an unrest among a certain group of owners that were on this week's conference call that are unhappy with a wide range of issues ranging from Goodell's performance to certain NFL employees to the league's Los Angeles situation and to other issues that date back to the Ray Rice situation and beyond."

The reporters added that an extension for Goodell was expected to be done in September, but Jones has continued to obstruct those efforts. While Jones would need to assemble a group of 24 owners to oust Goodell as commissioner, it's clear that there is unrest.

"That was our recurring theme, that there's no leadership," one executive told Mortensen and Schefter. "Everyone there [in the league office] is trying to win the latest news cycle, and there's no long-term vision. It's just, 'How can we minimize the bad headlines, maximize the revenue and move on to the next day?' And there's an increasing frustration to that approach."

Houston Texans players are planning to protest as a unit before Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks in the wake of team owner Bob McNair's controversial "inmates running the prison" comment, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Texans held a players meeting Saturday in Seattle to decide how to handle Sunday after McNair's comments surfaced, the source said.

Texans left tackle Duane Brown told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Sunday morning that he anticipates "up to 65 to 70 percent" of the team's players could kneel. He said the players would not remove the team's decals from their helmets as had been discussed.

McNair's comment was made during the owners meetings in New York earlier this month. Referring to ongoing player demonstrations during the anthem, he said, "We can't have the inmates running the prison."

The comment was made public in an ESPN The Magazine story published Friday that looked in detail on what went on at an Oct. 17 meeting of select NFL owners, players and union leaders and the full owners meetings the following day at which McNair made the comment.

McNair apologized for the comment Friday and again Saturday, saying: "I am truly sorry to the players for how this has impacted them and the perception that it has created of me, which could not be further from the truth."

On Saturday morning, he met with Texans players and expressed regret for the initial comment. One day earlier, Texans players considered a walkout from the team facility, and two players -- star wideout DeAndre Hopkins and backup running back D'Onta Foreman -- were listed as Did Not Practice-Not Injury Related on the injury report, absences that sources said were directly related to what McNair said.

Also Saturday, a coalition of NFL players extended an invitation to McNair, commissioner Roger Goodell and unsigned quarterback Colin Kaepernick to a Monday meeting in Philadelphia at which they hope to address players' "immediate concerns before additional progress can be made."

It was not immediately known if McNair, Goodell or Kaepernick would attend. A league spokesman had said earlier this week that Kaepernick was expected to be invited to the next meeting between NFL players and owners.

I was thinking that too.. I can also see Snyder,Jones & McNair(aka Trump’s NFL Bffs) making sure they’re first ones in front of the camera communicating.. how much they approve of the move.. It would be a good PR move for the league.. They could use the hiring to deflect from future questions about why there aren’t more black head coaches and other racial issues.. “We don’t have any problems dealing w/ issues of race look we have n!ggerblack commissioner”...
