Chicago has 2.72 million people and a rate of 8.52. And those murders are strongly attributed to a single pocket of the city's population. That's a problem. If you don't see that, you just have your head in the sand.

But it is a revelation, maybe not to people like you who lived through the really bad times, but a lot of people outside the city never realized how bad it was there. And again, just because it's better that it was, doesn't mean it's good, so this argument that the media is just sensationalizing things is BS. All the big cities have been big decreases in homicides, but Chicago still lags behind most of those other cities. If you cared about your city, you wouldn't be trying to dismiss the problem that represents.

MOST of the homicides are concentrated into the same neighborhoods.

you seem to be more concerned about the scale of the problem while I'm more concerned about the root cause of the problem. the scale of the violence in chicago is an issue no doubt but the root cause of the problem is a bigger concern. the murder rate in flint, mi was the highest in the country the last I checked and it was 62/100,000 people. flint, mi only had a total of 48 murders in 2015 and according to the stats that were posted earlier Chicago had 488 a ten fold increase. obviously chicaago is a much larger city resulting in larger number but i guarantee the underlying causes of the carnage in chicago are very similar if not identical to the underlying causes of the carnage in flint. drugs, racist drug war, deindustrialization, outsourcing, poor schools, poverty, redlining, political corruption and in flint you can throw in lead polluted water. if we don't address the underlying issues the scale doesn't matter. these issues exist in big and small cities throughout the us.

my point is that the same problems lead to the same results. the scale of two identical problem is insignificant if the identical root causes go unaddressed. if a 350 lb man has aids and it goes untreated he will die. the same is true if a 175lb man has aids and it goes untreated. the circumstances and timeliness of their death may vary but if the root cause goes untreated they will both die regardless of their size. pointing the finger at Chicago while ignoring the same underlying issues in Memphis, st. louis, little rock, Oakland, b'more, new Orleans, cinncinati and other smaller cities b/c the scale isn't as big isn't helping anyone. until we solve the root cause of these issues it doesn't matter what city we are talking about b/c we'll still be talking about the same thing. the scale may vary but the carnage, death, mayheim and destruction is the same.
