Updated Ultra Street Fighter 4 tier list from TKD places Hugo dead last - three familiar faces take top ranks

Last week TKD posted his initial tier list for the Japanese arcade release of Ultra Street Fighter 4 and has since circled back to offer more thoughts on the game, with the details translated by BeastNote.

A few things have changed, with a handful of fighters rising above the rest to form the new top tier.

It's important to note that there's a brand new build of USF4 out now and this is now an older version of the game, so these opinions and thoughts expressed after the jump may change completely once these players get their hands on the next round of balance updates.

Along with TKD's tier list, you'll also find opinions from Kazunoko, Uryo, Koji KOG and Wao, among others.

TKD's new tier list for Ultra Street Fighter 4

B+

Ryu, Akuma, Gouken, Hawk, Guile, Sakura

More USF4 impressions from Japanese arcade version

Uryo

"Sakura becomes harder to play. No significant improvement. Footsie is necessary. And you can't drop a combo now."

Kazunoko

"Umehara-san changing his alias...." (his alias became Umehara, (with comma) breaking the tie with 「Kazunoko)

"I think Yun has quite advantage over Sakura."

"Kindevu using Hawk now?"

"Please don't nerf Rolento's rolls! Though it's better if they do (laugh)"

"Yun now requires more of meter management in USF4."

"When a Hugo challenges me, my first thought is choosing by mistake?"

Reiketsu (Claw player)

"Umehara-san's Hugo repeatedly lost to my Izuna loop and still continued with smile. His love of Hugo knows no bounds. I'm terribly sorry for doing this."

"Umehara-san's Ryu still kills me (Claw) with just Hado and MK."

Desora (Gouken player)

"They should charge only 50 yen for playing Hugo." (average Japanese arcades charge 100 yen a credit)

Koji KOG (Hawk player)

"Haitani-san was filming when I won Dogura-san's Rolento by just doing Condor Spire. Then I realized and kneeled down and said to him (Haitani) 'Please don't upload this. If Capcom finds out Hawk'll get nerfed to death!' It was uploaded anyway."

Wao

(Moaning about Delayed Wakeup but we say let's listen to someone else who don't random Ultra and expect opponent not to block)

EX Uppercut into air throw, target combo into Ultra: Decapre bread and butter combos; Air shows new Ryu swag combos and more in USF4

CCG|Air recently uploaded footage from Northwest Majors VI that gives us a look at the latest build of Ultra Street Fighter 4.

In this article we have a video of numerous useful Decapre bread and butter combos performed by pH|LPN. There are combos into her air throw, FADC into Ultra, target combo into Ultra, and more.

Additionally, Air shows off some of Ryu's new combo potential, along with testing how safe Makoto's axe kicks are. Rose players also get a glimpse at her new and improved Soul Spiral utility, as it can now hit after a reflect.

Hit the jump to check out Decapre's Ultra Street Fighter 4 bread and butter, Ryu's swag combos, and more.

Late at posting this but

A while back we asked you, our readers, if Japanese players were being given an unfair advantage in Ultra Street Fighter 4 at EVO this year.

The majority of you said "yes", and Joshua "Wolfkrone" Philpot -- whom EventHubs correspondent Jason24cf recently caught up with -- echoes those sentiments.

"We have to learn five new match-ups, learn delayed wakeup setups, learn when people will have the tendencies to use delayed wakeup, learn when people will use red focus, as well as adjust to all of the new buffs/nerfs to the matchups we previously learned.

"This is a lot to cram in before EVO," he tells us in this exclusive interview.

Wolfkrone also speaks his mind on Capcom's balancing process with USF4 and why he has mixed feelings about it, why he's all for Edition Select to be played in tournaments, as well as his views on some of C. Viper's changes in the game -- such as HP Thunder Knuckle (DP) FADC being -5 in block in the latest build.

The full interview, after the jump.

Jason24cf: Hello Wolfkrone. I noticed recently you've been very vocal about the changes to USF4. What are your current feelings towards the game?

Wolfkrone: I like SF4, but all of these constant changes are giving me bi-polar feelings towards the game.

We are presented with buffs and we get excited because we believe our characters will be good. Then a couple weeks later, "oooh this will be too good”, and whatever Capcom changed is reverted.

In addition to those reverted changes, they add nerfs. After reading the post on Eventhubs.com regarding Guile, it seems like they are basing their changes off of “players” rather than balancing the game as a whole. They reverted Guile changes (buffs), and add nerfs because they believed "in the right hands", he would be unbeatable.

Who do you think comes to mind when you think of Guile? Dieminion.

We all know nothing is unbeatable in fighting games. That is why characters come out of the wood works being super good because they are so focused on who the top players are using rather then making changes based on what we are abusing or how good we will be with them. They are blind to portions of the cast.

Jason24cf: Have you shared your opinion with Capcom in regards to changes in USF4 and if so, what were they?

Wolfkrone: My changes for Viper are satisfactory... I asked for cr medium kick buff which they gave, and they improved her overall footsies.

Jason24cf: How about overall gameplay changes? Did you suggest anything like the FADC -5 change. Many players feel it’s a "fair nerf" because its was a "get out of jail free" or a "scrubby tactic" for C. Viper players. Do you believe it to be a scrubby tactic?

Wolfkrone: I do not agree with -5 change. DP FADC is not a “get out of jail free card”, DP fadc was 1) a tactic that a lot of us used to keep their momentum going during a heated battle as well, and 2) used to setup their opponent for a 50/50 that could lead to ultra. It’s also used as a "get off of me move" when you were being relentlessly rushed down. You have to sacrifice two bars in order to make DP FADC safe or else you will be open for a huge punish.

Jason24cf: You are one of the many top players who welcomes "Edition Select" for tournament play. Can you explain why you are welcome to this mode as a tournament level game?

Wolfkrone: They say they want to “make everyone good in USF4”. Edition Select does just that. No one will have an excuse about how bad their character is. It gives everyone a fighting chance.

Jason24cf: Some may argue that "V.Sagat" and "AE Yun" are stronger then any other character in any other version, and every matchup would consist of those 2 characters.

Wolfkrone: AE Yun and Vanilla Sagat are really good , but other characters are being overshadowed. Think about Super Abel, Super El Fuerte, Super Chun-Li , Super Guile, etc. Vanila Sagat and AE yun are good but so are the other characters in their prime.

Jason24cf: If you were asked by a tournament organizer "what version of USF4 do you want to play" at a US major, what would your honest answer be?

Wolfkrone: Select Edition! 1. There would be upsets; 2. Hype/Excitement during matches; 3. Everyone in the tournament would be a huge threat and have the ability to use a prime version of the characters.

Jason24cf: Do you feel Japan will have an unfair advantage in USF4 when EVO rolls around?

Wolfkrone: Yes, Japan does have an unfair advantage leading into EVO 2014. There is still no solid release date announced for USF4.

We have to learn five new match-ups, learn delayed wakeup setups, learn when people will have the tendencies to use delayed wakeup, learn when people will use red focus, as well as adjust to all of the new buffs/nerfs to the matchups we previously learned. This is a lot to cram in before EVO.

EVO 2011 we had the same problem where Japan had SF4 AE early, they came to EVO and blew a lot of people up with Yun because of how unfamiliar we were with handling the character. The same may be the case with USF4.

Jason24cf: Having seen videos of USF4, what are your thoughts on the pace of the game as well as the new characters? Does the play look slower to you or is this because players are getting used to the game overall?

Wolfkrone: I have watched a lot of footage. It looks like players are still adjusting to USF4. From the footage I have seen, I have not seen people use red focus much or delayed wakeup. As I said it looks like people are still adjusting.

Jason24cf: Again I thank you for your time, I know you have to run and take a final, so do you have any final words or shoutouts?

Wolfkrone: Shoutouts to all my fans and supporters. You can follow me on twitter.com/wolfkrone or on youtube at youtube.com/porkloafking.

'And they will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger' - The five Japanese fighting gods are headed to EVO 2014

With Ultra Street Fighter 4 being the main game at EVO this year, it's safe to say that the majority of us are anxiously awaiting the event's arrival. However, thanks to Seth Killian, a prominent member of the FGC who needs no introduction, some news was brought to our attention that single-handedly elevated the hype levels to over 9000.

The five Japanese fighting gods are headed to Las Vegas in order to compete at EVO 2014. For those who may be unfamiliar with these players, the five consists of MCZ|Daigo, MCZ|Tokido, HORI|Sako, Haitani, and Nuki.

Each of these players has been blessed with divine fighting game skills that spans across multiple titles. The former four have been actively competing in the Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012 tournament circuit throughout the years, and even though Nuki hasn't allotted quite as much time with the game as the others, he's spent much of this year practicing up and clocking in countless hours with the arcade release of Ultra Street Fighter 4.

EVO 2014 is already shaping up to be one of the most hype events of the year, and the first major Ultra Street Fighter 4 tournament is going to be absolutely stacked with amazing players.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 hits PSN and XBL on June 3rd/4th, retail versions on August 5th - an EventHubs exclusive interview with Combofiend

15_usf4release.jpg

EventHubs correspondent Jason24cf recently conducted an exclusive interview with Capcom's own Peter "Combofiend" Rosas over at ECT 2014.

The entire discussion focuses on Ultra Street Fighter 4, and Combofiend shared with us the one important bit of information that everyone has been aching to know.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 will be released on the PlayStation Store on June 3rd and on the Xbox Live Marketplace on June 4th. The digital version of the game comes at a price tag of $14.99 USD.

The digital upgrade will be released first, and the disc-based version will follow on August 5 for $39.99 USD. PC players can look forward to a retail and digital copy on August 8th.

This interview is packed with juicy information, and we've also added a transcript with some of the standout bits. Hit the jump to check it out.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 interview transcript

• Capcom is currently taking feedback from players in Japan who are putting in time with the arcade release of USF4. That feedback is being applied to the console build of the game.

• There will be new changes in the console version that Japan isn't aware of, and western users will be given Training Mode, which Combofiend feels will make up for the early overseas release.

• Due to lack of Training Mode in Japan arcades, Combofiend says that many players are afraid to try out new characters or changes because it costs $1 to play a game.

• Guy's kara Tatsu cancel into other special moves will be removed in the console version.

• Ken's crouching medium kick is being reverted back to its AE v2012 form.

• Combofiend originally felt that the nerf to Dragon Punch, FADC was a little drastic, but the majority of users approved of it. He now feels that the change adds more of a mind game to the situation.

• There is still no confirmation of online Edition Select, but Capcom is definitely aware of the demand for it.

• There will be no option to show hitboxes in-game.

• Combofiend says that there are no tweaks to the netcode at this time, but they are aware of the request.

• T. Hawk, Blanka, and others have gotten immensely better in USF4.

Updated trials mode for Ultra Street Fighter 4 won't come at the same time as digital version

22_usf4trials.jpg

If you were looking forward to using the updated trial mode for Ultra Street Fighter 4 to learn some of the new characters, you're going to have to wait until a ways after the digital version of the game is released.

While SSF4 AE v2012 lacked trials for Evil Ryu, Oni, Yang and Yun, USF4 is supposed to add these character's trial modes into the mix, along with the newcomers Decapre, Elena, Hugo, Poison and Rolento.

"There will be no new trials available at the time of the Ultra Street Fighter 4 digital upgrade launch," a Capcom representative said, "but stay tuned, as we'll have more news to share on this topic shortly after the digital upgrade version is released."

just preordered the upgrade, they said you can download the file on may 29th but yo cant play it till midnight on June 2nd

not having the trials right away is disappointing but I guess its for the better since it means updates will be coming later. They really need to add edition select online

And the upgrade is basically just to give people the game in time to practice for EVO
