Let me add some names that have yet to be mentioned that should have been mentioned, if people are gonna mention fucking Mannie Fresh and Timbaland (neither should even be mentioned in this thread)...might as well throw Pete Rocks' name into the mix. He raps better than both of those other two producers.

If you're gonna have a serious discussion on rapper/producers, at least mention people who's careers in both fields can be taken seriously and aren't just flavours of the month on the IC:

You mean that Prince Rakeem shit? lol, okay fine, if u say so. But on the real, ask yourself, where has the nigga gotten most of his acclaim for? You guessed it, working with the Wu! I'm not saying that his credibility as a producer/emcee is only limited to the Clan - because he's done his share to distinguish himself as a solo artist (e.g. Bobby Digital LPs) But his definitive work as a producer/emcee will always lie in shit like 36 Chambers, or OB4CL and Liquid Swordz - which were all collaborations, not solo LPs.

Niggas like Dr Dre (if you count him as a legit rapper and producer), Quik, and Kanye have all delivered masterpieces of their own. IMO, RZA doesn't have anything equivalent to The Chronic, Quik is the Name, or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Kanye's production is still crazy, but his raps are terrible at this point, he's been getting away with that hot garbage flow for awhile and needs some substance. College Dropout and Late registration Kanye was a more complete MC/Producer than this new and confused Kanye.

By the way, being a GOAT producer/rapper is a singular title - meaning that it's preeminently a solo act. That kinda excludes niggas like RZA, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and Havoc, whose claim to fame is being part of rap crews.

When we say producer/rapper, the people that really come to mind are niggas like Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, and Kanye - who have all had successful careers as solo artists. For sure, their work contains many guest features, but these dudes at least have definitive songs that just include verses by them.

Niggas are reachin' with some of these suggestions. the RZA? Dre? fam the RZA is the GOAT but his rappin' skills are weak. Same with most rapper/producers. Kanye is a dope producer and a good rapper. Most are great at one but Shenco at the other.

Pac was the first one who publicly spoke on it, but some just took it as him being mad. Then Daz and Warren G let be known they did a lot of work on the Chronic and Doggstyle, and wasn't properly compensated for it. Dre and Interscope sent them nice size checks and they never mentioned it again. And Snoop pretty much said Dre does not make "beats" he "produces" cleaning up tracks and make them "hits".

He basically gave Dre props on his engineering skillz. But that was good enough for a lot of folks that it quiet them.

That's also when the whole "beatmaker vs. producer" bullshit debate really took off in hip hop music

Before then there was no question about the shit

you either came up with the soundscape of a track or you didn't.

And no one blinks an eye that everytime Dre gets a new co-producer, "his style" conveniently switches up.
