If you a true fan of Hip Hop music then you would want to listen to an artist who is lyrical, the only time lyrics don't matter is when your in the club dancing with a fine chick with a phatty.

Rappers don't sing, their voices aren't and shouldn't be worth a damn. If they can't write good lyrics and ride a beat, they have no business doing this. If you want to talk over music, do commercial ads on TV. That's almost what they do anyway...

You have to be able to write songs !! Songs for the clubs, the chicks (if you're not gay), and the block. Every emcee can be lyrical but will

that relate to the club ? No it won't. Can you have a club beat and

a nice hook and still be lyrical ? Yes !! All of our favorites has done it time and time again from LL to Busta to Snoop to Jay-Z. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

–adjective, lyr⋅i⋅cal. 1. (of poetry) having the form and musical quality of a song, and esp. the character of a songlike outpouring of the poet's own thoughts and feelings, as distinguished from epic and dramatic poetry.

2. pertaining to or writing lyric poetry: a lyric poet.

3. characterized by or expressing spontaneous, direct feeling: a lyric song; lyric writing.

Keywords: having the the form and musical quality of the song. I agree lyrics are important, but to a certain degree, I think flow is more important than lyrics. Too many times, you'll get a track that has lyrics, but the artist's flow is so off that it ceases being a song and becomes spoken word with music in the background. How many times have you heard a song with great lyrics, but the flow is almost nonexistent?

No matter how great your lyrics are, you must have the ability to match your rhyme scheme to the track. This is rule # 1 for making a song. If you cannot do this, you shouldn't pick up the mic.

Lyrics can never be overrated in hiphop. NEVER!

I think for fans who consider themselves hiphop purists, lyrics aren't overrated, but everything else might be underrated.

Ear for beats

Flow and delivery

Mic Presence

Hook writing

Variety in concepts

Lyrics aren't everything, but they're a pretty damn big part.

I don't think being lyrical is overrated, in a technical sense.

I just think people equate being lyrical to complexity, using big words and metaphors and double entendres and multis and similes, etc.

I think that perception of it is overrated.

You don't have to be a walking Webster to be lyrical.

I dig what you're saying, I think ppl forget that being lyrical is outpouring you thoughts and feelings... and that would make all rappers and MCs lyrical. There is a difference between being a lyricist and lyrical

i think people confuse punchine rappers with lyricists

imo 2pac was extremely lyrical

Pac was if you go by the traditional sense of what being lyrical is, as far as lyricist which is more a focus on the lyrics (vocab, punchlines, double entendres, wordplay), he was ok at best
