Its not all about lyrics but they definitly matter... but someone like canibus isnt necessarily that because he rhymes alot of big words, i think whether a person actually takes something away from what you are sayin is the biggest factor

If an artist is not lyrical that doesn't mean im not going listen to there music , for example we all know rapper Gucci mane is not lyrical but his recent album is "enjoyable" and "surprising" from start to finish and his production is amazing plus he knows how to ride a beat , he also shows maturity and improvment . my fav mc is eminem and scarface but yet im also fans of gucci and jeezy , i've learned to enjoy the music for what it is, i no when i listen to em or face im going to hear stuff thats going to make me think, and when i listen to jeezy and gucci im not looking for them to say something thats going to blow my mind but i do no its going to be a BANGER.

I don't think being lyrical is overrated, in a technical sense.

I just think people equate being lyrical to complexity, using big words and metaphors and double entendres and multis and similes, etc.

I think that perception of it is overrated.

You don't have to be a walking Webster to be lyrical.

this is kind of my take on it. i equate lyrics to content. repetitive lines and hooks on a nursery rhyme level are there to get stuck in ya head like a jingle. it creates buzz but nobody is giving platinum plaques to jingle writers. If you can convey a message whether it be about cars, girls, drugs, etc. in a way that can captivate an audience then you are on the right track. However, not having a grasp on the English language in a lane where you make money on your words is ass backwards imo. You don't have to use seven syllable words to be a lyricist, but there should be some content to your lyrics.

Lyrics can never be overrated in hiphop. NEVER!

I think for fans who consider themselves hiphop purists, lyrics aren't overrated, but everything else might be underrated.

Ear for beats

Flow and delivery

Mic Presence

Hook writing

Variety in concepts

Lyrics aren't everything, but they're a pretty damn big part.

This alone is what keeps a lot of battle rappers from taking off imo
