Theyre kids. When i was a teenager i had much fun and did what kids do. So I have no problem with the kids now doin the same thing. If they like popular music that dont bother me at all. Who cares about analyzing what teenagers like? They sposed to be havin fun and bein kids not taken seriously.

One thing people always fail to mention is the "cool factor". What i mean is this generation of hip-hop consumers now are usually young kids and they wont care about skills or nothing, its mostly about being hip and cool. Now what drives an artist to become cool to younger kids? Just like in High Schoo, popularity. So therefor popularity plays a part in what theyll buy and support. Its not that they support Wayne cuz he "appeals" to them, if that was the case they woulda bought more of his previous albums. Once he got hot and popular tho they started to cop his joints and claim he was the best rapper alive out of nowhere because once your popular its almost synanamous with being cool/hip/in.

Kids look at rappers like super heroes or idols they wanna follow. Not just rappers but athlethes etc. So once they see Drake (for instance) wearing and rapping about a clothing brand theyll go and buy it, why? Because if Drake is widely popular hes somewhat considered "cool" to the young audience and since kids wanna follow anything thats cool theyll jump on it and buy w/e Drake is rapping about or wearing.

This is very true and im a living example of this.

About a year ago I started getting hella tattoos, wearing snapbacks, tanks and jordans, getting facial piercings and dying my hair different colors.

I did this strongly because of the "cool factor" that the rappers who wore this gave off. I felt like it was just the cool thing to do.

It's so amazing how everyone forgets how shitty the music industry was from 2007-2011, where we didn't have anyone new at all and mix tape websites were still blossoming. This generation is still recovering from that over saturation of bad music. At least the kids are listening to music that doesn't have to much auto-tune... When I was in high school that's all that would be played.

Man it makes me think that hip hop is just one big ass cycle... Everything seems so cyclical when it comes to music and peoples perception.

You meant 2004-2010. Those were some fucked up years in music. The over saturation of shitty music traumatized the youth and they still trying to get their musical taste together.

i'd say 06-08 was the most terrible years of hip hop

I remembered all them one hit wonders n the rise of autotune/ techno sounding "R & B" artists. That's when I had to turn to underground music on the regular, cause they mainstream was beyond hope at that point.

do dudes know Nas old in rap

Lupe aint too new either

what good artist came out in the lasttwo year

and dont say Kendrick cuz he cant craft a good album

fuck you dude.

one in four guys are gay.

in a room with three of your friends, you are that guy.

i'll never have that problem cuz i aint gay

It's not that they are lost, it's that they are a totally different generation. They see things differently than we did when we were growing up. This generation isn't as serious as we were, and that is why Jay-Z sucks. They don't want to listen to deeply rooted lyrics. They want to dance, and rock to over the top music that "play on words." The generation before us felt that our style of music was shallow and meaningless just as we do this current generation. It is what it is...and it will always be

most people will say from the 90s to the early 2000s, hip hop made a smooth transition.

Then the shit just jumped off a cliff and we got good/great albums rarely

I have a question... When have people ages in there teens and people in there mid 2 late 30's ever agreed on what "good music" is...?

Honestly, there's no reason why good music can't transcend age difference. Really gifted pop artists like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Elton John have always resonated with audiences - no matter their age. These guys all had successful careers that spanned decades. Almost every rock fan knows songs from the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, because of how enormously influential and popular these groups have been. Even less-commercial acts like Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young (musicians who were never fully accepted in the mainstream) have seen cumulative increases in their sales, because they have kept a devoted fanbase that includes young people as well as old. The simple fact is bruh, good music can transcend age, because good music is truly timeless.

Hip hop music prides itself for being as a genre by and for young people, but there was a time when rappers and producers had admiration for black music from all periods. How do you think sampling came about? During the 80s and 90s, it was always common for rappers to sample funk musicians like James Brown and George Clinton and Parliament. It didn't matter if you were a commercial artist like MC Hammer, or an underground act like Brand Nubian, or if you came from the West like NWA, or from the East like EPMD - everyone enjoyed the vibes of funk music, and incorporated it into their work. Or listen to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Gang Starr's old work - and you'll hear jazz samples from John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Listen to RZA or Pete Rock, and you'll hear samples from soul legends like from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. I don't know how today's youth came to be separated from their musical roots, but it was't always like this, not even within hip hop.
