Police shoot whites, too

In a recent editorial, The Sun suggests that the shooting of an unarmed Terrence Crutcher was unwarranted, and based on the video that I have seen I have to agree ("Freddie Gray déjà vu," Sept. 22).

The editorial also mentions NFL football player Colin Kaepernick's protesting of racial injustice and the deadly encounters between police and African-Americans, yet what you fail to mention is that more whites are killed by police in this country then blacks.

A recent article in The Washington Post said that of last year's 987 fatal police shootings, 50 percent were whites and 26 percent were blacks. That's one heck of a difference. But do you see whites burning and rioting and looting? Do you see whites or Hispanics outraged over this?

The media doesn't want to bring these statistics to the public — it isn't news. Just this week in Baltimore, a African-American chef and a Morgan State University student were killed in separate incidents. Where were the protests by black leaders in our city?

I'm sorry to say this, but the protests only happen when it involves the police shooting of an African-American. And in Charlotte, the police officer who did the shooting was an African-American, so it isn't a black or white thing all of the time.

Saltine logic...

Meh...if more whites are killed by police than blacks, then it's not blacks fault that white people dont make a fuss about it....

That's like trying to sell you on "if WE don't care about how WE are treated, why should you care about how YOU are?".

Them AllLivesMatter people need to be out there making something happen or lay on down and accept fate quietly.

(although in reality, they'd rather sacrifice that small percentage of whites than to uproot the entire system that oppresses others)

Plus there are way more whites than blacks so it would make since their total numbers are higher.

Blacks are still more likely to be killed.

Quoting race statistics on cops killing civilians does not paint the right picture. Need to show how many civilians were wrongfully killed to get an accurate portrayal.

We're not protesting justifiable defense by cops, we're protesting police abuse of their power with no repercussions.

True.

And the type of killings you're talking about aren't even tracked that well, tbh.

Exactly, so their point is moot. I wish people would call these folks out when they put up these straw men.

Absurd statistics without context.

There are literally 6 times more white people than black people in America.

Even if we entertain the notion that their is an equal distribution of wrongful killings among both racial groups; normalizing for population, the data would still suggest that black people are still 3 times more likely to be killed by the police.

And then those that are quick to downplay black people being victims of law enforcemnt misconduct will inevitably argue that the fact blacks are more likely to be killed by law enforcement is due to blacks being more likely to be violent criminals

This is the shit that kills me. How is it black people's fault that white people are cool with cops shooting them down unjustly?

I notice Tulsa ain't getting no press hmmm

They're also not having any major riots and social unrest. We all know why though.

The cop has also been charged, so there isn't really as much to be upset about in that case. Right now, at least, it appears justice may be served, but we'll see when the case comes.

Regional law enforcement hold rally to ‘show solidarity' for police after Crutcher death

TULSA – Regional law enforcement held a rally Tuesday to discuss the recent announcement that Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby is facing first degree manslaughter charges.

The regional law enforcement group said the rally was to “show solidarity for our brothers and sisters in blue as Tulsa County’s district attorney rushed to judgment against one of our own, without benefit of a full and complete investigation.”

It was scheduled to be held from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Hunter Park located at 5804 East 91st Street.

The charges against Officer Shelby followed the fatal shooting of Terence Crutcher by Shelby on September 16.

A statement was sent by the group saying “First and foremost: Mr. Crutcher’s death is a very sad tragedy. Our hearts truly go out to his family members as they mourn the loss of his life, and we pray that his soul is in Heaven.”

Then the statement went on to say “Please understand: This is not about race, and it is not about our black citizens and our law-enforcement community being at odds with each other. This is also not about whether or not Mr. Crutcher’s hands were in the air most of the time, whether or not he had a gun, whether or not there were drugs in his vehicle or his body, or whether or not Officer Shelby had a Taser or knew that another officer had one ready to use. This is about whether or not Officer Shelby believed that her safety or life was in danger when she shot Mr. Crutcher with her gun. That is the only issue because that is the standard for our law-enforcement community for using deadly force.”

Read more of the statement below.

Mr. Kunzweiler himself acknowledges, through his chief investigator’s affidavit, that Mr. Crutcher “was mumbling to himself and would not answer any of Officer Shelby’s questions” and “kept putting his hands in his pockets” while “Officer Shelby kept telling him to show his hands”, that Mr. Crutcher, who “was wearing baggy clothing”, then “began walking towards the abandoned vehicle” while “not responding to any of Officer Shelby’s commands to stop” as “she […] pulled her duty weapon in the ready position and follow[ed] him to the vehicle” while “repeatedly” “yelling for him to stop and get on his knees”, and that Mr. Crutcher “continue[d] on [to] the driver’s side front door” and “reache[d] in the driver’s side front window” as another officer “fire[d] his [t]aser” while “Officer Shelby fire[d] one shot from her duty weapon” because “she was in fear of her life and thought that Mr. Crutcher was going to kill her”.

That is the definition of justified use of deadly force by a law-enforcement officer. If you want to see what can happen when a law-enforcement officer is confronted with exactly that scenario and does not respond in exactly that way, go to YouTube on the Internet, search for the name “Dinkheller”, and watch the very-disturbing dash-cam video.

Mr. Kunzweiler alleges, through his chief investigator’s affidavit, that Officer Shelby “reacted unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation” and “bec[a]m[e] emotionally involved to the point that she over[-]reacted”. It was not Officer Shelby who escalated the situation, and to say that she became emotionally involved and that she overreacted is despicable. Mr.

Kunzweiler: Shame on you for saying such a disgraceful thing. Shame on you for rushing to file a charge based only on your office’s “investigation” without even having the toxicology report. Shame on you for playing politics and cowardly bowing to national pressure.

By filing this charge against Officer Shelby, Mr. Kunzweiler is saying that it no longer matters whether or not our law-enforcement officers fear for their safeties or their lives. If Officer Shelby is convicted of this, then the law-enforcement officers who protect us from murderers and robbers and rapists can no longer use their guns without fearing that we will put them in prison. That is the reality; that is not being overly-dramatic. Is that the city – or the nation – in which we want to live?

Office Betty Shelby is now claiming she was temporarily deaf while shooting and killing Terrence Crutcher.

The police officer who shot and killed yet another unarmed black man, Betty Shelby, was charged with first degree manslaughter at the end of last week. It's a rare sighting to see such a quick turn around in the death of an unarmed black man, as we've seen many other officers get away with murder, basically, further fueling the Black Lives Matter movement, rightly so.

Shelby turned herself in the following day, and now her lawyer is speaking up in defense of his client. The Tulsa officer just plead not guilty to the charge brought against her at her arraignment this morning, which lasted only moments.

Her lawyer, Scott Wood, is claiming that Shelby experienced "auditory exclusion" during the shooting of Terence Crutcher. It's a condition that can result in a high-stress situation, and basically means you go temporarily deaf.

"She didn’t hear the gunshot, didn’t hear the sirens coming up behind her just prior to the shot," Wood said on Thursday. "And it’s not only a common phenomenon described in literature, but it’s the No. 1 perceptual distortion by people I have represented who have been involved in shootings - diminished sound or complete auditory exclusion."

Shelby told investigators that Crutcher refused to get on his knees despite multiple requests, and that she feared for her life and thought Crutcher was going to kill her; this according to an affidavit.

Shelby faces between four years and life in prison if convicted. She was released on $50,000 bond last week. We'll keep you posted on this case.

^^^ oh now she was scared to deaf

amazing how these same 'merica loving cacs will insult the court's/judge's/jury's intelligence with some bullshit like that..

in high stress situations? what's stressful about the Terrence having his hands up in the air, posing no threat or brandishing no weapon?

hilarious they would use this to defend a cop, but if a guy at gun point by a cop is in a "high stress" situation and experience this, it would be considered bullshit..
