Charlotte police union official acknowledges ‘I didn’t quote facts’ on out-of-state protesters

A spokesman for Charlotte’s Fraternal Order of Police told CNN that 70 percent of the protesters arrested in Charlotte this week were from out-of-state. But he acknowledged Friday that his statement was nothing more than speculation.

It was also inaccurate, according to a Charlotte Observer review of police reports.

Of the 43 people arrested late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, 34 – or 79 percent – live in Charlotte, the Observer found. Most of the others live elsewhere in North Carolina, including Albemarle, Gastonia and Greensboro. Three others were arrested Thursday night; of those, two were from Charlotte and the third had not been identified by midafternoon Friday.

“I didn’t quote facts,” Todd Walther, spokesman for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police told the Observer on Friday. “It’s speculation. That’s all it was.”

Thursday, Walther told CNN that most of those arrested were not from North Carolina.

He called them “instigators that are coming in from the outside.”

“If you go back and look at some of the arrests that were made last night, I can about say probably 70 percent of those had out-of-state IDs,” said Walther during the TV interview.

The CNN segment has been shared widely on social media and on conservative media outlets.

Friday, Walther acknowledged that his comment was based on conjecture. He said he didn’t review arrest reports before the interview and hasn’t seen them after.

Also Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police chief Kerr Putney said he announced a midnight curfew during Thursday night’s peaceful march when his officers learned that a “violent” group of protesters were coming to Charlotte from South Carolina. He did not elaborate.

Well.. Well.. A pig union representative caught lying.. I've never heard of that one before.. But I'm sure this info won't stop the mainstream media using these liars as sources for their "reports"...

Hate that somebody had to die, but glad that this shit continues to be brought to light. I thought eventually shit would die down and people would start to forget about it. This will be another pivotal moment in black civil rights history, thanks to brave protestors and the advent of the cell phone camera.

I don't understand why every black man that doesn't go with BLM is called a coon etc, shouldn't people have the right to do what they wanna do and say what they wanna say

Why would any black person disagree with BLM (the organization aside)?

Idk what u mean by organization aside but there are plenty of valid criticisms of blm

Ppl having issues with the organization is one thing, but idk why anybody black would have a problem with the phrase or the general movement.

my issue is it is essentially begging whites to accept black people...instead of taking our just due. all these blm activists really think they're going to get white people to step down from their privileged positions with a hashtag and street protests.

Oh yeah! He got some explaining 2 do. Typical! Exposed! He need 2 do the LORDS work and suck on that Glock and blow his brains out. Sucks!

The more I watch the video the more I smh. This shit was a real live execution and this cover up is some movie shit.

They notice him get out the car with a gun and get back in it is what they said. Ok so he has a gun but the cop asked for a baton the break the window. Really? Ur gonna walk up on a car and break the window and dude has a gun?

They told him to get out the car. U are going tell him to get out the car with a gun so that he can aim at u? It doesn't make sense.

Unless muthafuckas are trying to delay the opening of various markets, financial institutions, and literally occupying Wall St. by staging a massive sit in on Broad, Wall, and New Streets. All of these marches ain't about sit. It's time to deprive of these muthafuckas of their money.

I'm still mad at that shit. She had a clear shot but moved the camera right before the shots. Somebody is going to grill her over that. The "don't you do it Keith" right when she moved the camera. People need to do better man.

This is getting crazy. I have a feeling this year will reach the boiling point. I know we've been getting killed by cops since forever. But this is something different. There seems to be a design to these tragedies leading to a end game we're not ready for. PLEASE wake up

San Diegan gives hugs to cops during North Carolina protests

A San Diego man braved the fray of the unrest in North Carolina Wednesday night but rather than joining the protests he instead offered hugs to police officers, a move that raised both ire and praise from onlookers.

Ken Nwadike Jr., is a graduate of Chula Vista High School and an Eastlake resident who founded the Free Hugs Project, an effort aimed at spreading love and raising awareness of social issues.

Known as the “free hugs guy,” Nwadike was already in South Carolina that day where he had addressed college students when he saw on television that the second night of protest in Charlotte was getting violent. So he drove an hour and half to the area arriving to the news that a man in the crowd had been shot in the face.

The demonstration was in response to the death of Keith Lamont Scott, a black man who was fatally shot by a black officer with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Officials said Scott was armed with a gun, which has been disputed by his family.

Nwadike is seen on video wearing a black “free hugs” T-shirt standing between a group of angry protesters and a line of police officers clad in riot gear when he is beckoned by a white officer.

Thanks for being out here and being peaceful,” said the burly officer who gave Nwadike a bear hug. A second officer also hugged him and shook his hand.

He said the first officer told him he knew of his work and told Nwadike to keep it up, that he was making a difference. “Don’t let the things these guys are saying get to you,” the officer told him, referring to the crowd who was hurling ugly insults his way.

The demonstration of love did not go over that well with some of the angry protesters, however, who yelled profanities at Nwadike. Undeterred, he attempted to win them over as well.

“It’s about staying neutral,” he said as he turned to face the aggressive crowd.
“None of these people shot anyone,” he screamed gesturing at the officers.

“His uniform doesn’t make him a robot just like your skin color doesn’t make you a criminal,” he said to another person in the crowd.

“Take off that badge, n****r, take off that badge,” one protester yelled repeatedly. That man, who was wearing a red jacket, is seen later in the video shaking Nwadike’s hand. “I know where he’s coming from,” the man said.

But not everyone shared that point of view. One woman was so belligerent that it was frustrating, Nwadike said.

“I can’t even reason with you,” he said to her as others shouted and called him names.

Nwadike took to Facebook the following day where he wrote:

“Last night was very risky and difficult being on the frontline fighting for peace. I lost my patience with a few people, but I know I got through to many and kept some from getting arrested. Unfortunately, a young man was shot in the head during the protests. Condolences to his family. Hate and violence won't fix the damage that has been done, only love can do that.”

The post has since had some 25 million views, more than 400,000 shares and almost 14,000 comments.

One man wrote, “This guy should be running for president.”

Another man who identified himself as a law enforcement officer said, “It's refreshing to know there are people like him out there trying to portray a valid message to the close minded public... wish more people would listen to gentlemen like this.”

“Thank you for bringing common sense to this situation,” wrote another person.

A woman posted, “This project restores my hope in the human race! Thank you with all my heart!”

Nwadike, who was profiled by the San Diego Union-Tribune in May, said he started giving away hugs after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The 34-year-old father of three said he wanted to participate in the next race but did not qualify so he instead stood on the sidelines and offered hugs to runners to encourage them.

His work has since taken him across the country where he has offered hugs to everyone from Paralympians to Donald Trump supporters.

Nwadike said while he did get a lot of positive response he also got an email from an African-American woman who said he was a “disgrace to the race.”

“Because I hugged a white police officer? That’s just disgusting to me,” he said. “So somehow we should all just divide and go on hating each other? he asked. “That will never be OK with me.”

She was talking to the officers when she said "don't you do it".... She was pleading with her husband to get out the car the whole time

But yea I've already seen cacs, members of the media using the video as proof Keith wasn't being compliant so the shooting was justified

All things considered though I can't fault her for what transgressed

In her position I would've been tripping

And has it been confirmed why they even approached their truck in the first place?

Police expected today to release videos of fatal shooting of Keith Scott in Charlotte

Police are expected to release videos of the killing of Keith Lamont Scott Saturday, according to reports by Observer news partner WBTV.

The footage, from police dashboard- and body-cams, show some views of Tuesday’s fatal shooting of the 43-year-old black man in an apartment complex parking lot. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney has said the footage does not provide “absolute, definitive visual evidence that would confirm that a person is pointing a gun. I didn’t see that in the videos I reviewed.”

Police showed Scott’s family the videos Thursday. The family, through an attorney, requested they be immediately released to the public.
