(THE ORIGINAL 2 LIVE CREW)

Before Me So Horny, before Throw the D, before Luther Campbell transported them to Miami, Mr. Mixx, Fresh Kid Ice, and Amazing Vee were living in California. This is 2 Live Crew – the early years, before Luke Skyywalker, before the controversy. No explicit lyrics…

David Hobbs (aka DJ Mr. Mixx) teamed up with Chris Wong Won (aka Fresh Kid Ice) and Yuri Vielot (Amazing V) in 1984 to release their first single on vinyl through Fresh Beat Records/Macola Records, out of Hollywood, Cali. The trio were Air Force veterans living in Riverside, a suburb of Los Angeles. Revelation is a proto-bass, electro record with positive-leaning, old-school lyrics. For example:

See, I remember back in Brooklyn, when I was a child

Actin wild, cause that was the stlye

But as I grew older, I learned the deal

Because my old lady told me, “Son, be for real

You have a chance to be an architect or scientist

So why do you choose to be like this?”

You have to get yourself together before it’s too late

It’s up to you to be a bum or someone great

^^^^THAT'S THE 2 LIVE SHIT RIGHT THERE, that vintage sound that is now know as the Miami sound started in cali.

The flip side, 2 Live, shows off Hobbs’ 808 programming and scratching skills while Fresh Kid Ice raps

Right away you can hear the makings of the 2 Live/Miami sound. Not surprisingly, this record was a hit in south Florida, prompting Miami promoter Luther Campbell (aka Luke Skyywalker) to book the group for shows.

In 1985, the group released another single on Fresh Beat/Macola, called What I Like, which is filled with more electro influences and, um, cowbell:

In 1986, Yuri Vielot decided to leave the group, so he was replaced with Mark Ross, aka Brother Marquis. Ross was also a friend of Hobbs’ from Riverside. Now living in Miami, the group created a new single which took them in a raunchy new direction. The single was called Throw The ‘D’

2 Live Crew - Throw the D

Unable to find labels who would release the song, Campbell founded Skyywalker Records and released it himself. The single sold over 200,000 copies. In late 1986, Campbell officially joined the 2 Live Crew as its manager and frontman

With obvious nods to Blowfly, 2 Live Crew Is What We Are was equal parts Miami-bass instrumentals and X-rated party records, the most infamous being We Want Some Pussy, which showcased adult lyrics and rock guitar. It also layed down the “2 Live” template – dirty lyrics from Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis, production/turntable work from Mr. Mixx, and the chorus/cat-call from head cheerleader Luke Skyywalker. The album was an underground hit in Florida, and even though it was little known outside the southeast, it had already started getting attention from the authorities.

The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are is the first album by hip-hop group the 2 Live Crew. It was released in 1986 on Luke Records to a great deal of controversy and promptly was certified gold by the RIAA. It includes the hits "We Want Some Pussy," "Throw the 'D'," and "Cuttin' it Up." Bob Rosenberg, a south Florida DJ who would later form the dance-pop group Will to Power, remixed and edited the song "Beat Box." In Florida, it was deemed obscene, and one store clerk was charged with felony "corruption of a minor" for selling it to a 14-year-old girl. The clerk was later acquitted.

The following year, the album reached #24 on Billboard's R&B charts and #128 on the Billboard 200 charts.

School these muthafuckas, aqua....2 Live Crew were 1st amendment champions..(INB4 someone mentions the Lil Wayne vs. Emmett Till situation..)

@DisciplinedInSight and that's the other reason why they are one of the top 10 greatest groups of all times, they have 3 classic albums, one of the greatest DJ, the first southern hip-hop artist to ever go plat.

but they fought for hip-hop at a time when hip-hop was burning all across the united states going into suburban white communities, the powers that be seen how powerful this black urban artform is and was scared shitless.

hip-hop was about to be banned, they had senate meetings on hip-hop, i remember i was watching that shit on ABC with Peter Jennings...

They was scared of the message but they chose to go after 2 Live Crew thinking they was going to be an easy target, because while 2 Live Crew and NWA was kicking up dust, East Coast was acting scary and shit and blaming groups like 2 Live Crew and NWA for brining heat to hip-hop and fucking it up in their words.

If you sold a 2 Live Crew album you was going to jail, they had undercovers going in mom and pops arrest store owners and clerks who sold 2 live crew, and the county sherrif was letting store owners know you sell 2 live crew you going to jai. County Judges and U.s District Judge ruled 2 Live Crew was obscene and illegal to sell.

I will touch on this more in this thread later

Lol! Goat thread and group. I had every tape. My mom was like, "as long as I don't hear it..." I appreciate that musical freedom she gave me. And everyone should appreciate what 2 Live fought for. Ha ha. Remember that Sheriff who kept going after them was later arrested for cuckolding his wife out for $ while he his in the closet and watched. Lol! I love America! One it'd the most important groups ever. Even Chuck kicked Griff out.

Move Somethin' is the second album by Miami hip hop group 2 Live Crew. The album was released in 1987 on Luke Records and was produced by Luke Skyywalker and Mr. Mixx. It was certified Gold and featured the singles "Move Somethin’" and "Do Wah Diddy Diddy." The album improved on the charts from the previous album, making in to #68 on the Billboard 200 and #20 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. Musically, the album incorporates samples from such diverse sources as James Brown ("With Your Badself"), Manfred Mann ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy"), The Kinks ("One and One"), Yellow Magic Orchestra ("Mega-Mixx II"), Kraftwerk ("Drop the Bomb"), and Quadrant Six (the title track). On the song "Word II," 2 Live Crew's DJ Mr. Mixx scratches up Brian May's guitar solo (as well as the chorus) on "We Will Rock You" over the crowd stomp-and-clap beat, which was sampled from the same song. Its wide musical range is nonetheless all encompassed by the Miami Bass sound, in its heavy Roland TR-808 kicks and fast percussion, and as usual stamped with lyrics reflecting the group's sexually explicit humor.

1988 saw the group’s sophomore release Move Somethin, which was even more popular than the first album. Move Somethin came out of the gate with no intentions of being discreet – the album cover features all four 2 Live members sitting clothed in a hot tub, wearing gold chains, and ogling a woman standing up facing them, while her backside faces us. Campbell had made the decision to sell 2 versions of the album – one clean and one explicit. Savvy high schoolers, however, knew where to go to find a clerk who would willingly sell them the explicit version. That year, a clerk in Alexander City, Alabama named Tommy Hammond sold the album to an undercover cop and was charged with selling obscene material. He appealed his conviction and was acquitted, the jurors not being fans of the government telling them what to listen to.

Move Somethin’ was certified Gold, reaching #68 on the Billboard 200 and #20 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. The album is filled with samples from a wide variety of musical genres, including Manfred Mann, James Brown, The Kinks, Kraftwerk, Queen, and Yellow Magic Orchestra. It’s all glued together by a heavy Miami-bass sound and adult lyrical content.

They're also responsible for introducing the T&A content in Hip Hop..I'm sure every full blooded man in here appreciates that..

Rap videos wouldn't be where they're at if it wasn't for Uncle Luke and company.

I remember seeing Mr Mixx on Video Music Box when they used to show the DMC DJ world championships. A lot of people slept on him until he did his thing on the turntables.

Hello Gentlemen.. I enjoyed reading your comments about the 2 Live Crew. It is always pleasure to find people who appreciate them and what they have done musically, as well as their fight for lyrical Freedom of Speech. I would like to let you all know, that Fresh Kid Ice & Brother Marquis are currently in the studio, working on soon to be release new music. Also, we are now booking Indie Artists for The Pipeline Tour across America starring the 2 Live Crew starting in Aug.

I will share with Christopher ( Fresh Kid Ice) who is one of the Original founding members of The Crew, in regards to what was well written and well said.

Once again, it was my pleasure reading. Thanks for showing Homage..

Debbie Adams aka Miss Honeybee.. Team 2 Live!
