1 Thing I never Got About Suge

From 1991 - 1995 Deathrow was all Dr. Dre.

Dre signed Snoop and the dogg pound.

Dre put the albums together.

Suge just sat back and collected his checks as half owner.

When Dre noticed how Suge ran things when he started flexing his muscles, he got out. Smartest thing he ever did.

True story.

I watched this nigga Suge struggle to play blackjack at the Bellagio. You could see his mouth moving as he was adding up the cards. He was taking too long to play, trying to play it off and shit. This old Asian lady said something that nobody at the table understood, scooped up her chips and bounced, giving that nigga a death stare.

I was losing big that night but that moment was worth every dollar. lol

Exactly! This nigga had no purpose. He should've been muscle...not the BOSS. Didn't he get his start as Dre's bodyguard anyway?

Yes he had dr. Dre who was talented and chronic was a good album but that still doesn't explain the business success

There are lots of good albums that record labels dont ride into millions of dollars

Illmatic and reasonable doubt never turned those companies into 300 million dollars

Hell all of wu tang was never close to being worth 300 million

Simply saying "chronic was dope" is not a detailed enough reason for how death row was so successful...and if it was simply the influence of dre, then how come that aftermath album flopped?

Someone behind death row was good at the business, who was it, cuz it sure as hell wasn't suge

Who did the marketing, promotion, concert reps, who did the accounting, budgeting, finances....

Having a dope produce is just the beginning, getting to 300 mil takes true business skill.

He was a bodyguard at ruthless and he knew harry-o.

That's how they got the money to start deathrow. He just played the background until Pac came along and then started bullying artist and brought gangs to the studio.

Eventually fucking up the label.

I GOATed your post. You explained it perfectly. I've heard a lot of albums that sound dope and even sold more than The Chronic (didn't The Chronic only go 2X plat when it was out?). For example The Fugees The Score album sold 6X platinum when it was released but I don't think anybody at Columbia/Ruffhouse generated 300 million dollars.

I think they were selling stuff like bandanas with the chronic leaf and T-shirts and stuff like that. You'd be surprised how much paraphernalia a record label can sell of an artist to a teenager who already bought the CD. There's the T-shirt, the wristband, the earring, the chronic friendship bracelets, fake tattoos, etc. not to mention the poster.

When I was a teenager I had mad Run DMC and Michael Jordan posters on my wall. I even had a Run DMC T-Shirt.

Ok so assuming all that is true the t/s question stil bears repeating "how the fuck can suge strongarm his way into 300 million"

That shit has to be the ultimate strongarm in all of american history. The gotti mobb was never worth 300 million

Tony soprano in a fictional show was never worth that much

Marlo and avon and whoever else on the wire was not worth 20 mil let alone 300

So this real life guy from the street was able to take no skills other than an ability to beat ppl up and make em drink piss and turn that into 300 million?

We missing a big part of the story, cuz if our understanding of suge is all it took, then this has to be the biggest gangster of american history.

Suge was suppose to be the muscle for Deathrow early on. He helped Dre get out of his situation after the NWA. I think he was charismatic too and Dre prolly felt like why not have him on board too (remember Dre was still 20 something). After a while I think Suge strong armed himself into most opportunities and whole could blame him coming from where he was ? In documentaries they said he would often use his physique and demeanor to intimidate execs into the dumbest shit. Nigga hung Vanilla Ice off a balcony, even if it wasn't true in those times were you really tryna find out if a 6'4" hood nigga from Cali was bout it ? I think he was savvy early on and did do some big things like seeking out 2Pac when nobody wanted to sign him. That was a gutsy move even if MATW sold well. But how much of that was Dre vs. Suge we'll never know for sure. Pac often said he rarely saw Dre and it was often Daz, Johnny J, Mike Dean who was producing his records. It's tough to say I wish Dr.Dre would speak on it. I'd love to be a fly on the wall listening to Dre, Snoop & Marshall Mathers talk about that stuff. Em seem like Dre prolly tell him everything.

What gets me is..I've seen in documentaries people say that Suge was such a great businessman. I'm like HOW? He was just big and aggressive.

He used his size and goons to force people to drink piss if they didn't do what he wanted...this nigga ain't some savvy guru. It was ALL Dre. Suge is the most useless figure in hip-hop when you think about it and probably the most incompetent executive of all time..he overachieved like a mf

This post got me thinking...that coupled with the fact that this nigga Suge NEVER goes to Prison for that long even though he can be linked to like 85% of all murders that happened in the LA metro area in the 90's .. shit might be waaaaay deeper than rap.

Suge must have had some Executive Producer talents. He knew how to select and attract the right people and create the right situations for hit records to be made.

He ain't attract shit tho. His whole thing was

"So uhhhhhh you gonna sign to deathrow or you want to stay in prison here"

"So uhhhhhh you gonna sign over those royalties or you want to be dropped off this balcony"

"So uhhhhhh you gonna let Dre out this Ruthless contract or you want your skull bashed in with these baseball bats"

I think this might be the path to get some real answers, if you wanna go searching

Like I said, we just throw out terms without really thinking about then to deeply.

300 million is not some bullshit. For a black man in early 90s, really only 91-97 when pac died, to go from an invesent of 1.5 mil to 300mil off a dre record, a snoop record, a couple soundtacks, then a double pac cd, is unheard of. 300 million aint no joke, you cant just luck into that shit, and I refuse to believe you can strongarm your way into that, if that's the case I'll take some pipes and go hang that facebook dude out a window right now to get him to sign that shit over.

Suge has to simply be the public face of something much deeper, something or someone that has a deeper reason for making it seem like suge can build a 300 mil couldn't by himself in six years.

Just the sheer energy it would take to do that would be too much for him he wouldn't have had time to go to all those parties, beat up all those ppl, and smoke all those cigars

Suge is the 90s version of Birdman. Snoop & company came to Death Row because of Dre. After Dre left then it would've been Pac that would've attract people to the label but he didn't live long enough.

Idk I think pac was on his way out too. he started realizing that suge was ripping him off

Also, Pac prevented people from signing there too (I think dude from Oynx was one of them)
