DJ Clue first couple of mixtapes were Reggae tapes

DJ Silva Surfa had Queens on lock before Clue

Nobody screamed as bad as S&S ..... he had the worst tapes in NYC plus he was just as bad live

Kid Capri & Ron G set the mix tape game off in NYC

Doo Wop was the GOAT mixtape DJ in the mid 90s. He would have popular MCs drop "freestyles" (really pre-writtens over somebody else's beat) on his tapes. He was the first mixtape DJ to do that.

But DJ Clue took over in the mid 90s by getting "exclusives" (new songs before they leaked anywhere else) on his tapes. DJ Clue has a legendary tape from 1996 called 4,5,6 that was all exclusives. The whole tape was unreleased material by popular rappers. That was the first mixtape of its kind. And then Clue kinda took over from there until Tony Touch dropped 50 MCs in 1999.

Kay Slay started killing em around 2001. I remember I had the Kay Slay tape with Ether. That mixtape probably goes for a fortune on EBay nowadays. By 2002/03 Kay Slay was dropping a mixtape every other week and the other mixtape DJs couldn't keep up. Kay Slay was moving faster than the internet in 03.

I know somebody who knows somebody who went to high school with DJ Clue. Apparently Clue used to get clowned and picked on in high school by the thugs and bullies. But it wasn't long after graduation that Clue started getting connections in the industry. Pretty soon he started putting out tapes and showed up to his high school reunion driving a Benz.
