In my opinion, it is not at all overrated.

I absolutely love it. The best movie I have seen in a while and of 2009.
You can say it's predictable but the storyline is based on reality and I am going to see it a second time, in 3D of course.

i'll see it on dvd, when ppl overhype movies, i get turned off and wait for it
I understand, I am usually the same and the majority of movies that initally are overhyped arent that great for me.
The only reason I actually went to see it is because someone close to me recommended and told me that I myself would love it and I guess they know me well cause I do.

All I can say to you is NO!! Go see it in 3D. It was beautiful to look at and it was just amazing.

I would say it's the people of Kemet (Ancient Egytians, so yes, Africans) meets the Indigenous people of North America. That is how I felt throughout the movie, it was telling our story.

Why? ****SPOILER****
In the movie the government in Pandora plotted to take over what belongs to the Na'vi people, to get closer to them so that they could ultimately teach them English, strip their identity, and compltely erase their race from their memory as the Europeans tried to do when they invaded Africa.
They were trying to befriend them so that they could steal their resources as did the Europeans when they invaded North America. They made many references to the Na'vi people as savages, much like the indigenous people of America were referred to as by the Europeans, all because their culture was different. When they blasted their gas and fire bombs it's as if it also represented diseases which were brought over by the Europeans.
