Why would it be difficult to tax prostitution? There are lots of person-to-person services. People often cheat on their taxes there, but many do not. I commend the tax cheats, btw.
One other bit about prostitution being legal is you would see many hybrid jobs like secretary-prostitute and similar. Prostitution wouldn't look the same way it does now. You would rarely see street prostitutes, they would probably work in much more comfortable settings, if they could. You'd probably look up your favorite brothel, see who's working that night, go over after reserving your slot, etc. Tourist spots would recommend places, etc.

Actually, the reason violence exists in prostitution today is because prostitutes are fearful of reporting attacks from pimps and johns because their profession is illegal. It's like a confessed bank robber claiming he was pick-pocketed. Legalizing prostitution would mean many can now report acts of violence without reproach or scorn. Knowing that such acts can be reported and prosecuted would be a deterrent to would be attackers. The reason prostitutes have pimps is to protect them from the attacks of competitors and johns. The pimps in-turn use violence as a way to control these prostitutes.

Apparently, it's fully legal in Ontario now.
Where prostitution is illegal, it's obviously illegal because of cultural/religious based attitudes about sex. How people can still believe that prostitution should be illegal knowing how many sex workers are killed or abused because they can't ask for police protection is shocking. A woman can get an abortion if she wants to but she's not free to have sex for money.

I have been saying that it should be legal for the longest time now. All the government has to do is tax it and regulate it. But its the churches and the religion aspect of it. If it was regulated then maybe the violence would stop because as another poster said the SIMPS would be brokers you call reserve your time and you go. US is missing the boat REGULATE IT ALREADY. Its the same as what happened with smoking and booze back in the day it was illegal now it is taxed. How much do the states make from cig taxes?
