I've also read that men don't have mid-life crises because they are middle aged but because they are married to middle aged women. Middle aged men with younger wives are less likely to have one.

Most men have a mid-life crisis because at some point we all realize that whatever our childhood/teenage dreams of life were probably aren't going to ever happen. That realization is too much for some people to handle and they begin to resent their actual life in favor of a fantasy life they most likely would have never had to begin with.
