Makes a lot of sense, a large number of people will casually claim that they did, and will do foul things, but rise up in a rage if you suggest they're a bad person because of it.

White people not changing so I get where this lady is coming from and what she trying to do. No person in power no matter how they got there is trying to give up that power or hear about the fucked up shit they did to get into power.

We as black people do this to. IMO similar to how some black people still mad at Bill Cosby for saying the shit he said regardless of the shit being true!

I've reached the point in my life where I don't even bother anymore. I lost all interest in explaining shit to white people that they can freely look into themselves. I know this attitude isn't helpful but if you want to look into the historical condition of being black in this world, please visit your nearest library. Im over that shit.

Anybody would be mad at someone coming an telling them that despite all their hard work, they only achieved something because of their privilege. That's essentially what white people think we're doing every time we bring up white privilege or institutional racism. They need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that no one is saying that whites don't accomplish anything themselves on an individual basis. We're just pointing out that no matter how hard it may or may not be for them, it will always be a little easier because being white affords them benefits that nonwhites don't receive.

The ironic thing is that the whites that are always so quick to get angry and denounce the concept of white privilege are the same ones that will look at blacks and tell us that we only accomplish anything because of affirmative action.

White ppl with superiority issues? Who would've known. Been known this. The Lt Governor in Missouri just said Obama & Holder are more racist than the Ferguson PD smh. The same mf who claimed that there should be more justice for Anglo Americans during the Ferguson riots. These white ppl aren't to be reasoned with

I don't think anyone would ever deny that white privilege exists (especially with whites making up the majority of the population in Western countries) but there isn't a static white privilege that all white people have all of the time. In claiming that modern society is setup to maintain white supremacy you're treating it like some mysterious, larger than life system separate from individual people and their interactions. Black people and other people of color are capable of racism, the only people who aren't are paralyzed and incapable of interacting with the external world. Even during slavery and apartheid, when blacks were legally and systemically discriminated against, most black people were still capable of carrying out racist acts against whites. Whites can be and are discriminated against by people of color as well as by other white people. It's ironic that someone who would rightly criticize a 'good person/bad person' binary could make such a 'black and white' generalization in claiming that we are born into a racial hierarchy and every interaction with media and culture must confirm it because that's how the 'system' is set up and the decisions and influence that specific individuals make and have is necessarily subservient to that.

The author is out of his mind if he thinks there are no people of color or 'down' whites who are too defensive to look at racial issues objectively or not perceive criticism of their views as personal attacks (or feel the need to make ad hominems and assumptions about a person's private biases instead of focusing on why a position is irrational or contradicts available evidence about how society works). Probably the only thing I can really agree with the article on is that people can be unaware of their own racial biases but most people, including people of color, are biased in favor of their in-groups or in other ways regarding other social issues.

Imagine if I was an astronomer. Everybody has a basic understanding of the sky, but they would not debate an astronomer on astronomy. The arrogance of white people faced with questions of race is unbelievable.

Black people don't know what it's like to be white anymore than white people know what it's like to be black. So neither is in anymore of a position to talk with authority on race, not just about being black or white.

If people of color went around showing the pain they feel in every moment that they feel it, they could be killed. It is dangerous. They cannot always share their outrage about the injustice of racism. White people can’t tolerate it. And we punish it severely—from job loss, to violence, to murder.

Oh, brother. Statistically, blacks in the U.S are more likely to behave violently against whites than vice versa. Whites can also be fired or attacked for sharing what they perceive to be the injustice of 'reverse' discrimination against them.

The ironic thing is that the whites that are always so quick to get angry and denounce the concept of white privilege are the same ones that will look at blacks and tell us that we only accomplish anything because of affirmative action.

I think that would be hypocritical but 'white privilege' is a claim about more than just your accomplishments being handed to you because you belong to the advantaged group. You're telling people who have faced anti-white racism and/or whose lives are complete shit for reasons other than discrimination that they're better off than all people of color. Depending on circumstance, being white can be an advantage, a disadvantage or completely neutral when it comes to how well someone is treated or how well their life in general goes.

Last year, a white male Princeton undergraduate was asked by a classmate to “check his privilege.” Offended by this suggestion, he shot off a 1,300-word essay to the Tory, a right-wing campus newspaper. In it, he wrote about his grandfather who fled the Nazis to Siberia, his grandmother who survived a concentration camp in Germany, about the humble wicker basket business they started in America. He railed against his classmates for “diminishing everything [he’d] accomplished, all the hard work [he’d] done.”

His missive was reprinted by Time. He was interviewed by the New York Times and appeared on Fox News. He became a darling of white conservatives across the country.

I remember this cac, the concept ofcehite privilege went completely over his head.

He argued against white privilege while unintentionally proving its existence and white liberals loved it but couldn't understand the concept themselves

great read.....

i just have my doubt about it being a mainstream topic....

unless interviews like this are headlining major markets......it can be easily ignored....

as much as i love the IC...if the first time and only time i hear about some shit is on here.....it just serves as a good conversational piece amongst friends.....

ain't shit bout the world changing

If you understand white privilege there is no way you can logically argue against it.

To argue against it is to say that whites do not nor have never had the upper hand in American society and that all minorities have been and continue to be in the state their in solely by coincidence

"white fragility,"...“a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include outward display of emotions such as anger, fear and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence and leaving the stress-inducing situation.”

fragility—the defensiveness, the fear of conflict—is rooted in this good/bad binary. If you call someone out, they think to themselves, “What you just said was that I am a bad person, and that is intolerable to me.” It’s a deep challenge to the core of our identity as good, moral people.

Pretty dope theory. I think it explains quite a bit when discussing these issues with whites.

I think it applies very broadly though, when you challenge anything someone was taught from birth or sound as if you are challenging their values and ideals you will get those responses.

It applies to not just whites but gays, Jews, the religious, Afro/Eurocentrists, xenophobes etc.

Add men to that list lol
