Why is Redman never mentioned as a top tier MC

Dude fathered two of my favorite rappers (Em, Luda). He's #1 on my personal favorites list. I think he's slept on cuz he doesn't have fans or the media dickriding him to that #1 spot. He's humble enough to say fuck that #1 shit and just spit, and his catalogue speaks for itself. He's #1 to some people whether the media or the mainstream public accepts him or not, so that's all that matters.

BTW, Pancakes and Syrup was a bangin ass mixtape. Wish he had some of those songs on Reggie.

I can see with Ludacris but with EM and Red?

Em and Red definitely have a comedic/cartoonish vibe to them. My name is, Just lose it, Drips, Real Slim Shady, I'll be dat, Lets get dirty, Soopaman Luva (songs), Let dat monkey out,etc all have that vibe to them.

Come on b. Listen to Red's first 3 albums and both BO's and there isn't that much comedy on them. Maybe dashes here and there but not really.

Never said all their music like that, but their persona is definitely defined as that. People (white America) view Redman as the funny ass pothead who hangs with Method Man, the music is only a extension of his persona imo and his persona is the funny weed head rapper.

But his music has been there way before he even had the persona. White America didn't even know who Red was like that until around when How High came out. He was making music way before that. I just don't get the notion where Muddy Waters, Wut Thee Album, Dare Iz A Darkside have no replay value because he's perceived as a pothead later in his career.

Whoa, Red was always a weedhead. He had weed songs in all of his albums... How To Roll A Blunt, Smoke Buddah, A Million And 1 Buddah Spots... all from his 1st 3 albums. Not that those songs didn't have "replay value" according to some people... matter of fact those were his best songs.

Once again, i didn't say all his music is like that. To me Redman made the crossover to friendly/comedic/etc Red on "Muddy Waters" and then really got the commercial success on "Doc's the name 2000". He was very comedic on Muddy Waters compared to his early projects, songs like Pick it Up, Smoke Buddah,Chicken head skit, Soopaman Luva, etc. His earlier stuff before was much more grimmey, i agree with that but when he started fucking with Meth his music went to some pothead/funny shit.

he used to be my favorite mc back in the day...
as i grew up....
he stayed the same...
he lacks diversity and has shown zero growth as an artist...

Powerful post. I messed with from the minute I heard him on Head Banger, but his shit stayed the same and not even in a good way.

I know he's always been a weed head but even his weed anthems were soulful to me and not as cartoony as say an Eminem.

I guess I can see how a song like Smoke Buddah is seen as comedic but sonically the shit is dope and has replay value to this day.

And Blackout! was still gutter and he was clearly fuckin with Meth by then. But I'll agree his transformation started on Muddy Waters although it's still one of his best albums.
