Why is it so easy to misunderstand the Bible?

there are a number of reasons

1. Many people will read their own presuppositions into the bible. This is what is called proof texting. They take parts of the bible out of context interpret them in a vaccum and form beliefs around that rather than forming doctrine from the bible people ineffect read their doctrine INTO the bible.

2. Some people try to understand the bible with a "natural mind". Many people will approach the bible with a mind that is "logical", "rational" and "practical" however the bible says that it is foolishness to the carnal mind and only accessable to those with a spiritual mind. Jesus prayed to the Father before sending His disciples out and said that He rejoiced that He revealed the things of God not to the prudent but to the babe (simple minded). The bible says that the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are saved it is the very power of God.

3. Some people are using the wrong bible. I firmly believe that many bible misunderstandings (and I've shown this time and again in the old R&R fourm) that bible version is key. One version says one thing others say something different. The Lord our God is NOT the author of confusion so it must be that the devil has had his hand in trying to corrpt and lead us astray with false bible versions. It is my belief and I have some proof such as underlying manuscripts and such that the King James Bible.

4. Not having the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This goes along with point 2 but not having the guidance of the Holy Spirit to teach you things about the bible and give you revelations about scripture is a key.

So these are just a few reasons. I'm sure there are more but I cannot think of them off top.

God isn't interested in how well-informed we are to His Word (though it is important), but do we believe in it; that in spite of things that are left unclear, we would be faithful to it. Well, there are people who know the Bible backwards and forwards and don't believe in it. And if you take into consideration the thief on the cross with Jesus, it wasn't like he was taking a crash course before he died.

The biggest reason it's easy to misunderstand the Bible is because none of us were living in the time period in which it was written. Just think about the vernacular we use and imagine how much of it will actually be understood in context 2000 years from now.

I'll give an example. I heard this one scholar talking about the Bible. And he was discussing the "easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven" line. Over the years, several groups have used this line to renounce wealth because they were thinking about a camel passing through the eye of an actual needle. That's clearly impossible, so the line would imply that rich people can't go to heaven. In reality, there are these rock formation in the desert that during those times were referred to as "the eye of the needle" Camels can pass through them, it would just take some effort. See how the context of the line changes just from that bit of knowledge.

it's easy to misunderstand, because people haven't been taught the proper way to read the scriptures.... line upon line percept upon percept, we have to search the scriptures for the true meaning & understanding... Most people like to read the bible & give their own personal interpretation of what something means, but if they knew better they would know that's not the way GOD operates his word....

Another reason why is because we've been denied the simplicity of the word do to our sins... once we repent (change our sinful ways), be baptized & live accordingly to the LORDs laws, statues & commandments we will start to understand the ENTIRE bible, not just certain parts that make us feel good...

It's not like back in the day when angels (gabriel-holy spirit/angel) would visit man & give instructions on what to do, all that came to a stop after the resurrection of Christ.... so all we have now is his word (holy bible) to live by as an example of what to do or else it will be used against us as a witness when judgement time is appointed.

Because it's up for interpretation, I sometimes wonder if god even meant for everyone to take things in the same way being that we're all different, plus in many ways it's not clear cut and concise because of the mistranslations from Greek to Latin to southern Euro languages and northern Euro languages...

I wonder why so many people struggle to follow things literally...it's one thing to use the book as a source for inspiration, but to follow any book in it's most literal sense is a recipe for misunderstanding IMO.

yeah, thats a recipe for disaster....its what is called absolutism.

There is nothing inherently wrong with other translations and different translations if it serves the purpose of communicating what couldn't be done intellectually. But the "disaster" comes is when translations and interpretations spawn from personal presuppositions and world views.

1. Apart from the Holy Spirit, it is impossible to comprehend the holy word of God. Only God can reveal Himself to you and He does that through the Holy Spirit.

Understanding the Bible without the Holy Spirit is like a 2 year old trying to do trigonometry. Impossible.

ya think god wants for u to adapt to blind faith? that's dangerous
but there is something mystical and mysterious about religion and especially books of christianity
everyone has DIFFERENT opinions and nobody in mainstream knows wut the bible is here for
a test, a riddle, basic instructions before leaving earth, a guide?
a lot of unanswered quesitons remain in the book and a lot of opinions differ from groups
those who follow by blind faith and do as they are told, I don't think are doing it right

Serious question to the remaining Christians on the IC. If it truly is the word of God, shouldn't it be perfectly understandable and relatable to everyone willing to believe what's inside?

why is it necessary to understand something if you already believe it. Even if you did come to the conclusion that what your trying to understand isnt comprehensible...you will still believe it. So the only reason to try and comprehend what you believe is to explain to others. Different people will interpret what they can conclude from the information that they gathered. Nothing is really tested, screened, examined....its all up too interpretation based on the POV of the presenter. So at the end of the day...it doesnt really matter....only thing that matters is that you "believe".
