You need to hear MORE about it. You need to talk about MLK's change of mission, you need to be discussing how it opened doors for other minorities, that stuff needs to be discussed way more than it is.

it also irks me when i hear young black folk say, "we didn't suffer for 400 years to be blah blah." Word?

Is that not part of their heritage, so...they're not wrong.

Paradises/utopias don't exist. don't matter the race or whatever, human beings will always find something to beef over. there are all-white neighborhoods and countries that are 99% sunni muslim, and they still have problems.
i always wonder about all of those racist white folk from the 40s-60s. many of them are still alive and unfortunately have kids who sometimes turn out just like them. they probably still haven't changed since those times and are still pieces of shit, but i kind of wonder what kind of people they are now if they have changed.

yes, but sometimes, it's not part of their heritage. all black Americans can't "claim" that.
but that's not exactly my point. my point is that it can be quite pretentious and/or disingenuous when, say, a 20 year old black kid identifies her "suffering" with the suffering faced by her "ancestors."
Masterfultech;7153458 said:See that's where you're wrong still...it's part of their cultural heritage/history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_heritage) and there is nothing wrong with Identifying with it as it is Black american history
Masterfultech;7153458 said:and even greater than that it's a part of Black history period.
Masterfultech;7153458 said:And while you may think his/her suffering differs...it still suffering under the institution of white supremacy.
Plutarch;7153531 said:You're either misunderstanding me. Or you're understanding me, and I disagree. But I'm not necessarily saying that it isn't part of their (Black Americans) heritage. I'm saying that it might not be. If we're talking about cultural/national heritage, then isn't it reasonable to say that there are Black Americans who don't share that particular cultural heritage? For instance, black immigrants who now live in America whose cultural heritages lie outside of America?
Plutarch;7153531 said:This may be another key point of disagreement between you and me because I don't think that I "believe" in a "Black history." Or the term "black" has to be clearly defined in way that I suspect will be different from the way you define it. I know that may seem unpopular, but I was never a big fan of race in the first place.
Plutarch;7153531 said:Yes, today, a black kid can suffer under white supremacy, and black slaves suffered under white supremacy 400 years ago. But that's where the similarities could end, and for that reason, I wouldn't identify the two as closely as others might. Imo, such a generalization might not prove very relevant and can easily be bullshitted into some pretentious nonsense. And let's not forget that other nonblacks can also suffer under white supremacy. And that blacks can suffer under black supremacy. And so on and so on. I just don't like placing too much emphasis on generalizations.

Nigerian American
West Indian American

Plutarch;7153663 said:I'm not sure what the wikipedia article is supposed to prove. The article itself points to many instances where the term "black" is defined in vague, multiple, disputed, or arbitrary terms. And this is why I don't take the term "black people" very seriously. Ok, there's a wikipedia article on it, but that doesn't say much imo. I simply think that race is mostly bullshit.
kzzl;7153971 said:And this is why integration does not and will not lead us further.
You cannot practice integration in a society thatcan'twon't even educate people on the effects of racism cause folks are "tired of hearing about it". There's a thread in the Reason on how whites are trying to claim Hip Hop. And this shit is only going to get worst.
That "worst" will be our last chance probably. The term "black" is gonna have "conquered" as a defined term on wiki when it's over.
