Most people can't even tell me what Capitalism is. They relate capitalism to freedom for some dumb reason.

Most people wont be able to fully define "freedom" either.

When probably a good amount(including the right wingers who continue to talk about it) have no idea what the core fundamentals of it are.

Misunderstanding mostly. Republicans (Right Wing really) Compare any program thats to Help the Public as a Form of "SOcialism", They was calling FDR a Socailist when he first Came out with the New deal. Yet like u said, Nobody can really Exaplain Socialism and its Core principles. Most people Dont Understand that or Economy isnt Purely Capitalism. At the End of the day, its all about Agenda. Right Wing republicans Dont like a Program (Case in point, the Push for Healthcare reform) and they Label its as Socialism. People See (or hear) the word Socialism and they think "Unamerican", "Communist" and other Bizzare and downright Ridiculous Sentiements. They American public is Kinda silly, easliy manipulated and in some cases just dumb. I always seen that as a mild form of McCarthism.

It's not a problem with socialism that America has. It's a problem with calling it socialism that most citizens have.

People fear what they don't understand.

When it comes down to it, countries are rarely what they label themselves as any way.

Like the US.

That's what it seems like, that word just brings hate and anger out in people.

have socialism in America i think would be a good thing and truthfully America is already a socialist country any way. for example welfare is some thing that help the people, they would have that in a capitalists country. there are other example i can not think of right now but America is more of a mixed economy than a capitalistic country. if you want a truth form a capitalist country look at hongkong.even though china own them they leave Hong Kong Alone because that country make a lot of money.

Why? Here's my guess... most Americans like the idea of the American dream. There is a lot of entrepreneurs in the US. With Socialism, it limits the ability for people to make as much money as they could possibly dream of. Not everyone has this mentality, but there are those that do.

Also, there are socialist policies in the US - Social Security, Medicare for example that have not worked so well. The system is going broke and people fear that money is being wasted.

I think the main reason is that people think socialism is for the poor, instead of for the working class, and even when you point that out, virtually nobody in the US thinks of themselves as working class. In the US class has come to be defined as how much you make/the car you have/if you own a home, and not in your relationship to the means of production.

Thats why politicians and the general population is always screaming about the "middle class", because they have been taught that they are actually part of it (and that now their presence therein is threatened).

edit: Also a big part of the problem is the state of the socialist movement, mostly their lack of visibility, it's small size, and failure at communicating. So, even among the working class, who would be more open to it, there is a lack of familiarity.

You guys should read this.

Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth

That Mises has no credibility and is a cult figure should be taken into consideration before anyone starts reading this mythical nonsense. Austrian 'economics' is a cult masquarading as science, in the style of creationism or scientology.
