Why do we work?

Yeah except a lot of those animal are tryna not to get killed and eaten by bigger animals. They ain't just relaxin all day. Those niggas are tryna survive.

But the whole work and society thing was invented as a measure of gaining power. Greedy niggas wanted to take what belonged to no one and everyone at the same time so that they could use it to control people.

As a lightweight philosopher myself, I often ponder upon such things.

It's obvious that what we call "work" today is an evolution of the simple "work" we did before....gardening (for vegetables and grains), hunting (for meat and fish) and foraging (for fruits and nuts) in our earliest days it was all about those things, finding something to eat...period. It wasn't guaranteed but there wasn't limitations either, you could roam freely eating whatever you found no matter where you found it.

So I think "work" as we know it today is the byproduct of another human construct "private property", we work for access to something someone else owns. Society created "private property", for better or worse under the principle that civilized people can respect boundaries...even though these boundaries are totally artificial.

That's where we stand today, artificial human constructs run our everyday life "jobs", "government", "corporations", etc none would exist if we didn't want it to, but we see some benefits in their existence which is why they exist and because they exist...we have to work.

We have to work to collect currency, so we can buy food, clothing and shelter, pay taxes and get the other little amenities we like, for instance cars or computers. We work to increase trade and better society for everyone even if we believe that we only care about a select few. We work so that other people can get to work so they can contribute to society, we work so that other people can be protected, have shelter, eat, be clothed etc. We work because society NEEDS is to work.

Work exists therefore we need it.

Its limited so its our tool to use whenever the time is right.

Everything has opposite poles, good and bad, cause and effect, we choose what actions to take at the end of the day, its all in our hands.

Ownership of things, whether it's for ourselves, others or just to impressed. It's also a set of measure many use to determine worth or self worth. It's a distraction and a reward from the ultra rich as a way to keep note on who their best slaves/producers/conformists are, it pacifies and comforts us from the economic truths of this world.

Outside the walls of the civilized world it's spear and fire, inside it's job apps and electricity. We have become afraid and lack the confidence to set out as was originally intended, living off the land and natures bounty.

FEAR of consequences is why we work. Fear of not being accepted because we don't earn enough or have enough. With our innate greed, there will never be enough, this is one nature of material "sin" to coin the word.

We need money for rent, transportation, to pay your mortgage and bills.

We need things to make us happy, be it nice clothes, shoes, watches and etc.

Vacation and trips cost money, you can't travel without it.

You need money to retire.

You need to work to feed your kids and family and put food on the table.

But the whole thing with trading your time for money so you can enjoy your time "later" as in old age, pension age... THAT is depressing.

The whole thing with time being valuable is because it takes away from our YOUTH. That's the whole thing. Time is valuable because as each day passes we are getting older, yet we are trading 1/3 of our lives working in order to enjoy our... time deprived version of selves. (aka old motherfuckers)

I wanna enjoy life while YOUNG, I wanna enjoy life to the max, not waiting for government pension, and cheques to be handed out monthly by the time I'm 65.

In order to do that, you need to make MONEY, so therefore, work. But I ain't trading my time for work no more, time to make serious fucking money, trading your time and clocking in for other companies, there's limitation. Even when you DO make big salary from other company, you have to go by their vacation schedule, you have to put in overtime and work your ass off to make that big salary plus bonus. Therefore, BE YOUR OWN BOSS.

This thread seems to attack capitalistic society and the concept of 'greed' and 'excess', but you show me the lowest level of society, the most backwood bare mimimum existence, and they work.

If you're a spiritual/religious person, God rested on the 7th day. So if he rested, it means every other day he worked. It's innate. It's in our DNA.

And if thats not your thing, however you think we got here, work is a necessity. If you have 10 people and land, and thats it, its innate that work would evolve. I.e. all 10 people wouldnt go to hunt for food. Naturally, somoene is gonna say 'wait, we can be more efficient if i hunt, you cook, you clean, etc, etc. Thats delegation. That's work. Whether they got paid or not. Then you multiply that when its 100 people...1000 people...the services needed increase...the delegation increases...areas of expertise form...etc.

So you can draw a direct line from now all the way back to the origins of civilization. So thats a long answer to , imo, a pretty dumb question.

why do we do anything?...because we choose to

life is decisions and choices....that in itself isn't a problem....i think the issue is that a lotta people don't understand those choices and decisions....

Calling people greedy and materialistic these days don't fly, that shit don't make you revolutionary or deep.

Motherfuckers, get off your lazy ass and be ambitious, life is too short for anything less.

People talking about others being greedy and shallow and not understanding the joy of life that doesn't come from money, ALL BROKE MOTHERFUCKERS and POOR PEOPLE I've come across talk about having money and winning the lottery one day.

There's no way around it, you have to work, or put in work in order to enjoy life. If you think otherwise you are foolish.

The human body is condition to work. Not in the sense of a job but staying active. Human have a tendency of being lazy and being lazy only amount to poor health.

Y'all sound like brainwashed worker ants, its a bit depressing but a good reminder of why its only 1% .

Y'all stay healthy and keep working cause you feel you have to.

Naw, I didn't necessarily mean "old age", not sure how you confined my comment to that small a thought. Not knocking somebody that chooses to work til "old age" for a pension either, but my specific point in that part of the comment, is to reach a point financially where you can maintain the lifestyle YOU desire. You know that $ amount is going to be different for everyone.

we work to pay for our clothes which we wear to go back to work

we work to pay for our houses which keeps us at work to pay it off..even though we arent there most of the time

I was actually thinking about this last week. I came to a similar conclusion as @jono

We've allowed small groups of people to control enormous amounts of resources to the point where they can use these same resources to hire people to perform tasks for them. So many of these desired resources are already owned that employees are stuck working so that they can partake in the daily trade of life buying food and whatnot. Without a job you'd be forced to resort to crime, but there are consequences for that. It's like being stuck between a rock and a 9 to 5.

I would stray from his angle a bit though and say that this system benefits the people who own the most in society far more than it will ever benefit me or my kids. We honestly do not need this system, and there are people who still enjoy a simple tribal life to this very day. In a system where the necessities for life can be owned and even monopolized it is the owners who are getting the most out of it.

I know why we work now, but I'm saying, why invent work when everything was free. When we had no worries.

Shit seems backwards.

Granted, we wouldn't have this technology but that wouldn't matter. We would never know what that technology is.

I get where you're going but it's a natural evolution of creating and maintaining a civilized society. When you say everything was free, you mean that nothing held a monetary value. However there still existed a bartering system. Only difference is, once the population starts multiplying into the hundreds of thousands and millions, bartering with actual goods is just not practical. You need a universal currency. From there the natural step is to do things to acquire the currency. That's where work comes in.
