"Let a lotta niggas get airplay off street cred"
...You just described southern California's whole market...The gangsta rap mainstream phase ain't start in the south...
At what point did I say that this was a behavior unique to the South? Also look at the MODERN So.Cal Rap scene: The hottest MC's coming out of that region aren't as tethered to gangbanging as they've been in the past. Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock are the only ones I can think off and even then; their whole schtick/image isn't completely defined and necessitated by a history of gangbanging, at least IMO.
"And no offense, but I can't support a nigga off that alone"
...So, you can't support a nigga that you completely relate to, simply cause his rhyme scenes and subject matter aren't complex?...If you love a song cause it hits you, but the rapper isn't "skilled", you shun it?...
Your goddamn right I wont support a nigga thats a mediocre rapper. THIS SHIT ISN'T FUCKING HARD. 9/10 when niggas suck at rapping? Its due to a hilariously bad mix of lyricism or flow, lack of imagination, empty or one dimensional subject matter and/or glorification of some shit that I personally think is retarded....
For the most part if you suck at rapping, its probably because your not TRYING hard enough. I'll be damned if I reward mediocrity. Do I like some songs by some quote unquote bad rappers? Sure. Guys like Waka, scooter, etc. at points make a record that while composed of their usual bullshit, resonates with my taste. And a broken clock is right twice a day. Point is, i'm not some rap elitist; most of the niggas I outright dislike have some common denominator (usually a lack of subject matter). At some point, in art or sports or whatever, you draw a line at whats acceptable. Lets not act like ALL OF A SUDDEN, there's no general consensus of whats a quality artist/record in hip hop and what isn't.
"The problem is that's to the detriment of legit, skillful mc's"
...Outkast, TI, Ludacris, UGK, Scarface, David Banner, Chamillionaire, Trick Daddy, Wayne, Juvenile, Young Buck, J Cole, Nappy Roots...Have all sold more records than Gucci, Waka, Boosie, SouljaBoy, etc...So what is this support you speak of?...Support on the club scene?...In the south, the club is a large part of our culture, and certain music goes with it...Artists who make that type of music well can buzz all around the region, cause when we in a party mood that's what we wanna hear...Iono nobody that listens to club music all damn day...Plus, the only reason that those type of artists een get on YOUR radar is cause folk outside the south begin to play the records and talk about em...
Key words here are "MODERN SOUTHERN AUDIENCES". I even gave a general timeline when I referred to Young Jeezy, whose early success was hugely in part based upon on him being a street nigga.......................
"In the east coast, most the bigger acts had to sell they skills first as emcees"
Your comparison is off...Any southern artist in the same lane as those northern artists you mentioned had to do the same displaying of skills...They didn't initially have huge club/radio singles that got them popping nationwide...Their whole thing was "Look how well I can rap! Look at the different subject matter I touch on!"...A nigga in a club lane doesn't make music for that same purpose...It's "Listen to this shit when you in your party mode! Get money, fuck bitches, smoke blunts, pop bottles! Oh, I can rap cool too. But I know that's not what you focused on right now. Aw shit, the hook comin back!"....That goes for any region...There's rappers who care more bout showin off their skills, and rappers who care more bout making songs that cater to a certain lifestyle...AND Beans, Freeway, Cass, and Banks didn't get on cause they were just so nice...They were nice niggas attached to famous niggas...
At the bolded: And ultimately that seems to be a huge part of what we're arguing here. Ultimately what *I'M* saying is that the South props niggas up in the club/hood lane as the guys carrying your region. I think thats a fucking problem and reflects bad on Southern rap music. Look at other regions: The West has propped Kendrick Lamar/Black Hippy up as those guys. The Midwest has Ye, Big Sean, Em, Cudi, MGK. NY......well NY has yet to turn out a true all around star since the guys from Jay/Nas's era; closest thing is ASAP Rocky and maybe French......My point is that most of these niggas are the guys who are carrying their region and are far more skilled and versatile as artists and MC's than all those other Southern niggas I named.....And these guys aren't defined by making club/street shit. Only in the South do you damn well HAVE to cater to that crowd to get any love. Otherwise, tell me a non-hood/club rapper from the South that gets alotta love from the streets, at least on par with say Gucci.
