I felt guys shared the crown in the late 90's early 2000's there were no consensus "king" . In 97 it was Puff and Ma$e, in 98 it was DMX and Jay Z, 99 it was DMX, Jay Z and Nas.

You can not forget ja rule he was making some noise around 1999 and 2000 in New York city.

jay-z in 96? quit the dick ridin. no one was checkin for jay-z in 96 like that, not when he was an unproven MC in the game

Yeah, I peeped that too.. in that case, Lost Boyz should be up there as well, since their debut went gold around two months from when it was released..

I always wondered. What exactly does being the "King of New York" actually mean? Or King of the South, or whatever other kings there is in the rap game. Is it strictly a music thing? Like, Biggie was the King of the New York rap scene, or does it spread out to the hoods in New York with respect outside of the music?

You can give DMX 98 just as a whole with Jay either arguably there or right behind him

I think if you really look back at Jay's 1999 you gotta give him the year

Nigga What, Nigga Who

Jigga My Nigga

Girl's Best Friend

Heartbreaker (Remix)

Do It Again

Blackout verse

Money Cash Hoes + remix

writing Still Dre

Anything

Hard Knock Life Tour

Backstage + Soundtrack

97 has to go to Mase or Busta since Wu is a group.

Uhh, you do know that DMX co-headlined the Hard Knock Life tour right? Backstage IS Hard Knock Life tour, just footage and both the flick and the soundtrack dropped summer 2000.

Writing "Still D.R.E." makes Jay-Z king of NY? Hilarious.

1999 X dropped his highest selling album, which btw outsold Jay-Z's. X had most of his singles out in early-mid 1999 from "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" and then Ruff Ryders dropped the compilation in april 1999. He dropped ""...And Then There Was X" late 1999 and had full of hits like "Party Up" which really broke him amongst the pop crowd, even tho the single was released 2000. Early 2000 he had all them singles, had movies, headlined Ruff Ryders/Cash Money tour and much much more.

Whay are yall basing this on? Popularity? Seems like yall go back and forth on the way yall base it. If Biggie was king of NY 1997 then it was clearly due to popularity and so on. If yall base it on popularity then 50 was basically king of NY from 2002/2003-2005 and so on.

he did not co headline anything. Jay-Z headlined the tour & it's named after his album. If you watch Backstage you hear DMX & in other interviews DMX say this. Alongside of the fact that Jay was the last act. He damn sure wasnt opening for him with more material & debuting + featuring his artists
http://mtv.com/news/articles/1428207/jay-z-dmx-method-man-redman-launch-hard-knock-life-tour.jhtml

1998: Jay-Z relases album titled Hard Knock Life

1999: Jay-Z goes on Hard Knock Life Tour

2013: Niggas say Hard Knock Life Tour wasnt Jay-Z's tour

Fill in the gaps in your logic

Its weird you give X sole credit for Headlining the Cash Money tour yet dont give that to Jay on the tour of his namesake....Moving on-

i know exactly what Backstage is, whats your point. It was a concert film and soundtrack, released on Roc A Fella further proving my point- Once again, whats your point. DMX movies only count now??. You cant be seriously arguing this

Point out where i said writing Still Dre did that. it is clearly one in a list of many

Furthermore- Flesh Of My Flesh was released in 98. Its 5x plat which idk if you know is equal to the same 5x plat of Jay's album that year

Its only 1999 single was No Love for Me which didnt make as much noise as we'd like to think. Still dont understand what ur getting at telling me it was "full of hits" esp when A)every Jay album post 98 is "full of hits" & B) Most of Xs hits from And then there was X were in 2000 as it was released in December near Christmas. X's only 1999 singles were It's On, No Love 4 Me & What's My Name +guest verse on Money Cash Hoes

Anything else you wanna be wrong about

Uhh nigga i actually WENT to the tour nigga. They switched headliners each show between each other and the venues used to have alot of people leaving after DMX set, which Redman and Method have spoken on as well dickhead. They named it after his song, with the already infamous Annie sample, not his album. Uhh but X had 2 4-5x platinum albums in the same year nigga, not 1.

Your dumb ass is here talking about him writing a song for Dre makes him King Of NY? Are you fucking serious? LMAO. Ghostwriting a song for someone else makes YOU the king of NY? Okaaay. Jay-Z released his album AFTER And Then There Was X too btw, yet he was the king of NY in 1999?

Uhh wrong, Slippin was out as well. That wasnt even what i meant either.

And the last point you about the Backstage soundtrack, wtf are you talking about? That wasn't my point fool. You talk about And Then There Was X was out 2000 yet you dont acknowledge that the Backstage soundtrack was released 6-7 months after And Then There Was X and came out in the year 2000? Or that Vol. 3 by JayZ was released a week after X's album? Logic = 0. Backstage doc and the sdtrk was released in August 2000.

Okay, so Flesh Of My Flesh was released in December 1998, a week before his next album was out the following year, but And Then There Was X, which was released in December 1999, is a 2000 album?

in 1999 X and crew had the Ruff Ryders compilation out, an album which sold more than Jay-Z's the same year, had MORE features with artists like Mary J, GZA, Nas, Ja Rule, Eve, Foxy, Flex, 3 sdtrks while Jay-Z had a total of 7 guest (Puff, Foxy, Mariah, Ja, Flex etc) and both had features on the Black Gangster sdtrk in 1999 and so on, yet JayZ was the King Of NY 1999?

LMAO at this nigga logic. Nigga talking like you know what you talking about.

We gotta thank 50 for killing the NY scene for y'all.

Fif didn't kill the ny scene he sustained it.Nobody was checkin for ny rappas outside the dipset,g unit and jigga

Jigga retired for 3 years,Dipset fell off and G unit was the only relevant group coming from that region from 02-09

Only the people who hate fif say "He killed the ny rap scene".

They think jadakiss, fabolous would keep them relevant.Ny killed themselves asap rocky, joey badass, fred da godson, fabolous, french, vado are all wacc.Jada fell off years ago and drops wacc tapes and albums,Cam'ron don't try no more. When fif fell off so did ny's mainstream appeal besides jigga
