Maybe Philadelphia's own Schoolly D deserves a mention here also

I think that also Mobb Deep and others I can't recall at the moment, and later 50 cent were vital in keeping that style alive in the Eastcoast scene.

if this came out before eazy e and them started out west, then im claiming eazy e bit this style hard.

Some idiots in here, mixing up gangsta rap with mafia rap.

The op, confused himself, was talkng about mafioso rap, not gangsta or thug rap. Nas didn't start it.

G Rap takes it. Clothes thread.

G-rap started and it shouldve ended with rae. After that it was a played out gimmick. Nas did a complete 180 from illmatic to ride the coattails

not really, nas called himself escobar on eye for an eye, before the purple tape came out in 1995. and he was on kool g rap's 456 cover, and did the fast life with him. was also on az's doe or die album as escobar in 1995 he was part of mafioso movement, he just dropped his album later. the transition was gradual. and technically, he spit mafioso rap on "another day in the projects" in 1991 off his demo as i posted earlier.

Hm, interesting. I never thought about that. I think that NWA and Schoolly D came out about the same time, though Schoolly D may have been earlier so it's certainly plausible that NWA were at least influenced by him.

Ice T (another westcoast legend), on the other hand, I know was directly influenced by Schoolly D in a way. This is from wikipedia:

Rapper Ice-T, who is often given credit for the creation of gangsta rap, says that Schoolly D was the first gangsta rapper.[4]

The first record that came out along those lines was Schoolly D's "P.S.K." Then the syncopation of that rap was used by me when I made "Six In The Morning". The vocal delivery was the same: '...P.S.K. is makin' that green', '...six in the morning, police at my door'. When I heard that record I was like "Oh shit!" and call it a bite or what you will but I dug that record. My record didn't sound like "P.S.K.", but I liked the way he was flowing with it. "P.S.K." was talking about Park Side Killers but it was very vague. That was the only difference, when Schoolly did it, it was '...one by one, I'm knockin' em out'. All he did was represent a gang on his record. I took that and wrote a record about guns, beating people down, and all that with "Six In The Morning".[5]

If you compare this

with this

then you get the picture.

I'm not sure, but IMO:

Kool G. Rap then Raekwon then Nas then Biggie, Junior M.A.F.I.A. and Bad Boy then everybody else. Out of everybody that did the sound, I still think that It Was Written heavily influenced Life After Death, Foxy's Ill Na Na, and Diddy's No Way Out more so than any other album that came before.

On a side note, No Limit never gets props for the way that they got their production to sound mafiosos:
