I know the ritual that people get worried about is the blindfold ritual in freemasonry. I spoke to a freemason in 2009 and he explained that the reason you're blindfolded and then when the blindfold is taken off you see a torch is to represent rebirth, spiritual awakening and the journey from darkness to light (illumination). He said that its not to scare the initiate but people who dont understand will think that it is. He also said that masons have to memorize a LOT of verses and plays. Like i really do mean a lot. Crazy amounts.

i dont think so man. ive met black shriners before. you gotta remember, that due to the catholic church's wanton destruction, the greek and egyptian philosophies were all but lost to europe at that time. is was the muslim's preservation of these trains of thought that led to the age of enlightenment etc... i personall think thats a big reason for the shriners existence... could be wrong though.

theres was also the rite of Mizraim (the Biblical name of the son of Ham considered to be the founder of Egypt), which possibly considered to be accepted at one time but definitely isnt these days, which is now only really kept up in Italy ironically from what im told.

There is also Prince Hall Freemasonry, aka traditionally African American freemasonry which to my experience is no less highly regarded as F & AM these days.

last but not least there are orders of which only master masons can join... some of those are interesting to say the least, however they are not considered traditional masonic lodges.

The Historical Bavarian Illuminati was actually a blatant rip off of AF & AM Freemasonry. they were an unincorporated "lodge" of what I personally would consider to be the 1st organized group of Scientific Atheists, if you look at the translated documents of that time. They were enemies of the catholic church, more specifically, the Jesuits of the time, and the Rosicrucians. they did not believe in the Occult, and considered alchemy to be a big waste of time, despite somewhat organizing the order based on ancient mystery schools of the past. who knows if theres been a revival or yet another spin off, but the real life historical Illuminati simply wasnt that interesting in my opinion compared to the conspiracy theories lol.
