for me it's story telling and flow

you have to be able to connect with people

and i think you have to be good at more than one

to be dope to me at least.

Lyrics is without a doubt 1st in regard to Lyricism...Coming in at a close 2nd is compatibility with beat and Lyric. And 3rd is the message.

I would prefer a dude that selected interesting subject matter and stuck to the script.Thats a lost art nowadays.Being complex lyrically without talking a bunch of bullshit random punches or some sucka mc shit is hard to find right now.

Continuity

The ability to string together bars that flow together and sticks to one topic. Basically the opposite of Lil Wayne raps

Lets just assume that making sense is mandatory so we dont get a lot of Wayne/Eminem posts

i'd have to say Wordplay-metaphors, similies, puns, entendres. Should be first because aside from Flow this is the single most effective thing rappers do.Without it rappers dont distinguish themselves from just a randomn nigga talkin on beat or poets/speakers. the ability to use multiple english devices rapidly what keeps us sayin "__ is dope" This is what stands out the most and is the most noticable. This really seperates rappers into different classes when we have our debates. Bad punchlines/wordplay makes u cringe and can turn people off very quickly. Whereas clever wordplay will propel a rapper from his peers

2nd would be story telling. if you're not able to paint a picture with words and have people connect with what your saying or conveying, you're really putting a ceiling on how ill u can be considered. Just about every punchline rapper falls short in this category

3rd is rhyme schemes which is self explanatory. Do you sound the same on every song. Do you switch your flow up. Are u using the same patterns. Where do u drop ur punchlines. Do u connect metaphors throughout the verse/song.

i dont put too much emphasis on vocab the actual words arent as important as the content/context and the delievery. a rapper like Krit has simple vocab that covers a wide range of topics and emotions. Just because you're cramming 10 letter words inbetween every bar doesnt make u iller than the next nigga who just said what u did in 3 bars

Content, but half of the people claiming to be lyricist say 2Pac was not one so once again discussing lyricism with so-called hip hop heads and New Yorker's is just stupid. Content rules that's why Eminem is not a lyricist to me. 2 much rambling on about nothing way too often.

bein able 2 stay on subject while maintaing the ability 2 describe your topic abstractly and 2 also rhyme.

plus being clever, rapping is kinda like being a comedian. its not enough u give a puncline (lil wayne) its gotta be clever and witty(royce 5'9')

As far as lyricism specifically, I think story telling because the whole point is to convey a message in each rap you do.

In my opinion, 2Pac is a good example for hip-hop, he's just perfect cause he knows what work and what not, this nigga knows what he's doing.
