Rappers that shouldve blow up but didn't b/c the timing wasnt right:
Saigon: He had the gritty street image that was absent from the game, the machine pushing him & the producer who made roc-a-fella famous behind him - to top it off he was on the #1 hit show Entourage for about 3 seasons as Turtle's unsigned artist. He even had the innanet goin nutz after punching Prodigy in the face (at the time G-unit was not to be messed with). But what happened tho ? he came out in a year where only 2 albums barely went platinum (lil wayne's the carter 2 & T.I.'s King album) , the industry was paying top dollars on their biggest artists only to get back lukewarm sales & wen that happened a lot of artists got shelved or had marketing budgets cut. Saigon couldnt have dropped at a worst time in Hip-Hop. his debut album Greatest Story Never Told, really became an example of life imitating art.
Tony Yayo: G-unit was on top of the world from 2002 to 2006... w/ banks, buck & game sellin 4 mil, 2 mil & 7 mil respectively, the pressure was on for Yayo to show & prove. most ppl felt yayo would sell atleast 2 mil but to his chagrain he old sold a mere 500k (gold - which is still good). Yayo may not have had uber lyrics goin for him or bitches goin wild for him but by the time he got out of prison G-Unit seemed unstoppable & record after record was certified platinum so surely he wouldve gone multi plat too rite ? I always felt yayo's album was rushed, he just went into the studio had dope beats & Godly cameos to oversell his album but by the end of the day it felt like mediocore sexy w/ an ugly hooker that made u feel equally ugly for smashing. If yayo's album wasnt rushed, he took his time & the 2nd G-unit CD (which still sold 4 mil worldwide) got pushed back his numbers wouldve have been significantly higher. I still like Yayo as a G-unit fan tho, Pimpin was my favorite track off his debut album.
Murphy Lee: co-sign wat my nigga said. Murphy Lee had it all goin for him, He was Nelly's right hand, had a babyface that all the bitches loved, bubblegum lyrics, had the hype riding off of Nelly his first album shouldve gone atleast platinum - especially in an age where 3x plat was like goin Gold for some artists (if Chingy could sell 5 mil why not murphy lee ?). Too bad though, the public was just growing complacent of Nelly & Nelly was just about finished recording records & on his way to enjoying his money. No doubt his album still went gold but had the timing been right Murphy Lee couldve prolly sold 2 mil easy.
Papoose: After shocking Hip-Hop w/ his 1.5 million dollar deal w/ Jive everyone felt that Trigger Happy Pappy would for sure reach platinum heights but it didnt translate like that. He was on the biggest remix of the last 5 years & had the streets on lock (there was no competition on the mixtape market for pap other than G-Unit & Dipset) but he stil fell off. His highly anticipated Nacirema Dream was suppose to be the album of albums & even Source had felt that it was the #7 album most favored to score 5 mics. What happened tho ? When Pap & Kay Slay couldnt come to creative terms with Jive the deal got scrapped & the project shelved. Papoose later dropped most of the tracks on follow up mixtapes afterwards & his girlfriend (now wife) Remy Ma got incarcerated for assault all of which deterred his success. I doubt theres still hope for Pap in this day & age about a year after this ordeal he got into an altercation w/ fat joe & hasnt been heard from since. Soon this nigga gonna be poppin up on milk cartons smh. keep in mind Pap is hitting 36 this year.....
Slim Thug: Why is it that wen huge booms happen in the game theres always that one artist w/ just as much (if not more) than his predecessors that doesnt go plat ? Slim Thug was platinum in the streets, he had the support of texas, he was warring w/ lil flip (a vet in the south) & he managed to do wat all of his peers couldnt & even cross over into white america in a big way by featuring on Gwen Stefani's Neptune produced Luxurious. Yet despite all these things Slim Thug's album Already Platinum barely beat out 600k. So what happened ? Hard to say tho Chamilionaire, Mike Jones, Paul Wall came out in 05 & promoted all the way into 06 & went platinum. Slim Thug dropped his album in a harsh music environment of 2006. Had he have came out in 2005 perhaps things wouldve been diff't.
Maaann is a lotta niggas who came in at the wrong time & only a few who came out at the right time. For the future artists lets hope they dont fuck this up & miss. Some of those cats listed above couldve changed the game in a major way. Just imagine Papoose couldve brought back NY and taken the rock back from the south , Slim Thug couldve been the next Luda, yayo couldve been the Game & game yayo - thered be no west coast like there is now. at the end of the day timing is everything. Too much saturation brings the price down, too little exposure & ppl forget u were even there. Appealin to the masses is never easy. & even the heavyweights (wayne & 50 w/ their disappointing sales) can hit or miss. Lets hope the newcomers like Drake, J.Cole & anyone after can capitalize n hit in a big way. These up & coming rappers can really change the face of the game if their timing is right.
