You say that like it's a bad thing. Not everyone is perfect, so we like to look at the good qualities a woman has. if her ass is her only good quality then we wont judge her!

Yeah, commercialism has had a huge impact on that. People saw the money to be made in this industry and jumped on it. When hip-hop was just emerging from cyphers in the park and parties, you hear about the vibrancy of the culture. My biggest issue with hip-hop right now is balance: both in the sense of an absence of balance in terms of rap content in the mainstream and a lack of balance of the prominence in the 4 aspects of hip-hop (breakdancing, MCing, DJing, and graffiti).
Going back to knowledge of self, here is my biggest problem. In the earlier days, because of this extended culture, the music was tied closer to the community; it was an extension and expression for a community of people who MCs represented. When the industry got involved, music became a business and developed musical artists in vacuums outside of their community. Nowadays, artists (even independent artists) are running around getting free clothes and sponsorship deals, going to release parties and concerts on weekdays, buying bottles and jewelry on the regular... they're living life so removed from real world and communities. They're literally living in their own universe.
How can you drop knowledge of self when you're living so ignorantly? That's the problem.

When I grew up, having knowledge of self was a given. Most blacks shared pretty much the same experience and we didn't argue among each other about "was there racism" like today.
Racism was real and alive and no black ppl thought the way I hear niggas talk these days
These new kids think the belief in racism is an opinion or view, we accepted racism as fact, because Rodney King and a whole bunch of in your face racism was going on.
More blacks moved to middle class during my life so a lot of the younger kids have no connection to the struggle and only know this fake "post" racist America
Ppl are creatures of change and even though that movement was the truth, ppl got bored and needed the opposite, which is total ignorance and the powers that be pushed it out cuz dumb ppl buy shit, not smart ppl
