I mean Hip Hop artist as a whole not respect music . They dont respect it enough to learn the ins and outs of music , As far as learning to read music , play instrument etc . Not say that all great musicians can read music etc . But Hip Hop artist always find the lazy way out and fans let then get away with that shit . Yea u have your few good artist like Kanye , B.o.b , Jay-Z etc but as a whole , Hip Hop artist music knowledge is terrible . I mean look at it this way . A great artist is Curtis Mayfeild . Great Hip Hop producers make a career off Curtis Mayfield samples

Hip hop in and of itself is alive and well. If you want the good stuff, you have to search for it...but it's pretty accessible.

If you only listen to the radio, you're probably going to think hip hop is the stupidest fucking shit on the planet. Radio rap is just a product of a bunch of business men cashing in on the blood, sweat, and tears of hip-hops forefathers.

It seems like back in the day, artists were talking about their lives, goals, aspirations, hardships, etc.

Nowadays it's like everybody's just bragging about how dope it is to be a rapper. I don't really want to hear about that at all. I REALLY don't need to hear about people talking about how they can snatch my bitch if they want, either.

Truthfully the foundation was always weak. No musical training . Hip Hop always need other genres to succeed. No 70's soul , or Funk , or Go Go No Hip Hop. If rappers were more musically inclned from the get go the lack of musical quality wouldn't be expected now

We might be subject to strictly Spoken Word. What a terrible world that would be.

its the truth. what has jay z done POSITIVE for HIP HOP? not the millions he made for himself. im talking about what good has he done for the culture?

*debuted as a 30 year old rapper rhyming about make believe drug stories that is now a prerequsite for MC's to enter hip hop.

*while NY was making hard street hop in 97-98 Jay Z was making cliche club anthems with infantile hooks and chorus (jigger my nigg3r, can i get a what what) like cam said when did NY start bouncin?

*Def Jam had a nice roster in 2005-2006 to pop off a East Coast renaissance. instead of using the resources to market those artists who kept Def Jam afloat while Jay Z was sucking dicks at EMI. Jay Z used 10 Million of Def Jam money to market that bullshit Kingdome Come album

*BP 3 was marketed as a return to "hoodies and timbs" raps when DOA dropped. The fucking album dropped in Sept 2009 and ends up sounding like leftover Gaga/Kesha beats with this old ass nigga using AUH after every bar. I dont hear Gucci saying burrr or Waka screaming Flocka as much as Jay Z said AUH on BP3

The record labels are the cause for the way hip-hop is now, more so than the artist. The record labels tell the artist to be different but at the same time tell them to copy this artist or that artist that is hot right now.

It is an artist fault for signing a contract and not fully understand business terms on there, however when it comes to following your heart or being desperate for money, people do foolish things .....IMO

Yeah...Hip-Hop is in movies, commercials, even Elmo raps. But why in other Genres like Country and Rock can they make songs about life, politics, family and church and have successful careers, but in Hip-Hop we have to degrade ourselves and our women to sell? They won't play "Paranoid" on the radio. If your a Hip-Hop artist and you talk sense, you will never get heard. I cant say Hip-Hop has arrived until we can put away the trappin, ass shakin, pill-poppin verses and still be successfull. Hip-Hop has come along way.No Doubt about that. But it still has SOOO far to go.

Yeah you are right about mainstream rap but if you really love Hip Hop it ain't dead I mean with the net you can get any type of Hip Hop you like now I grew up in the late 80's early 90's I remember when you couldn't hear rap on the radio or see videos on MTV/BET so it has come a long way but I can't get on the South fuck up Hip HOP bandwagon every region has put out bullshit as far as the mainstream goes. I not going to whine about it I just support the kats I like by buying their albums and going to their shows when they come in town.

@tompetrez3 I fuck with Jay Z but I get your point

@Mrslim1 Yeah you make a good point but the reason Hip Hop started is because they cut out the music classes in NYC so you can blame the schools for that
