Oh shut up. Obviously Christopher Wallace didn't know that Biggy Smallz existed. He didn't have any hits, wasn't getting any play on Rap City or MTV. It's more likely that Big started calling himself Biggie Smalls without knowing the other Biggy copyrighted the name.

But as far as that Melle Mel dude, if you're a rapper, regardless of age, you should know that there's already a rapper named Melle Mel.

I can answer the Dr Dre/Doctor Dre question. They both came out in the mid 80s. One of them had a radio show in New York City and was using that name, the other lived in Los Angeles and was using that name. We're talking around 1986.

Doctor Dre's group was called the Original Concept Crew

Dr Dre's group was the World Class Wrecking Crew

They were both able to prove they were using the same name commercially (unlike Christopher Wallace who never copyrighted the name and wasn't using it on a commercial scale) By the time Christopher Wallace started releasing records Biggy Smallz has already copyrighted the name and could prove he released records under that name.

So the two Dre's made an agreement to avoid confusion, one of them would spell it Dr Dre and the other spelled it Doctor Dre.
