What are your thoughts when you hear rappers say, "CAUSE YOU KNOW I DONT WRITE DOWN MY RHYMES"?

it depends on the result

one person has to make an outline before writing a paper. another person can go from the top of their dome as they write. they both can write an A quality paper. who's to say which method is better as long as the result is respectable?

whatever works

I stopped writing my shit down well over a decade ago. I use to get writers block and I found it easier to just punch record. It was more natural ( at least it was for me ) to spit 4-6-8 bars...stop...peep how it sounded...conjure up follow up ideas, etc. I got the instant gratification of hearing if something sounded right and it opened me up more creatively. I don't think it is for everybody. You can't be lazy w/ it and say the first thing that comes to mind...which I think a lot of these so called "I don't write my lyrics" nigguhs do.......& yeah you can tell that they are saying the first bullshit that comes to mind. It's no different than writing to me.....just w/o the paper.

Writing your lyrics down isn't gonna make a wack line any better or a dope line any worse...THINKING about your lyrics...On the other hand...

And that's what it is. Of course though a bunch of people really think these artists just go in the studio & basically freestyles the lyrics & songs.

Artists been doing this shit since way back. Like you said the delivery gets more natural & you can go off more emotion. Reading lyrics off paper takes more time cuz you have to memorize it, make it sound good & not make it sound like you're reading it off paper while riding the beat.

Makes me mad when a nigga that's garbage brags about not writing.

But alotta these niggas today though it's about they delivery. They might have a subpar line but the way they spit it, make it work. Ex. 2 Chainz, A$AP, French, etc

There's no excuse not to be able to write shit down now, not like back in the 80's and 90's. everyones got a phone, or ipad, or computer, or some shit you could write it down on. Now if you choose not to write your shit down, it better be damn good.

Big and Jay are the only ones who should take pride in it. People like Wayne, 2Chainz,etc sound like wack ass punchline rappers who are piecing together one liners, they lack continuity and depth in their verses imo.

Jay-Z started this junk... then Wayne.. then T.I. and now 2 Chainz. All of these guys claim that they dont write their rhymes down... why; I HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA!...

I think many of us saw the Youtube vid of Waynes "not writting anything down" process. This niggaz was stuck re-recording 1 dam bar cause he kept messing up his line! Nga was rewinding, redoing, changing words, chaing tone...If thats they shyt that all of these rappers go through to be "unique", they are wasting major time in the studio.

2chainz said that he does sooo many features that he hopes that he doesnt give two people the same verse, "cause he dont write down his rhymes".. he has also admitted that he doesnt know how to count bars.

So what is the IC's thoughts on rappers thinking that they're sooo brilliant that they dont have to write down their rhymes?

I think it proved the power Jay-Z/Big/Wayne has/had. They were the only people I've heard this about for YEARS. Then Jay-Z and Wayne became living idols, so everybody wanted to do what they did. Shortly after that, it was an explosion of rappers who were so nice they didn't have to write when they were barely average with a pen and pad.

Personally, I give Drake his respect because he still utilizes a pen-and-pad game, which is why he does end up rapping circles around dudes when he raps. I'm so sick of people trying to make anything educated look lame and trendy.

"Oh, you still writing rhymes down, son? We off that writing shit!"

And it shows.

Writing on paper or a phone or whatever isn't gonna make his lyrics better...Unless he wants to change his lyrics...Y'all are missin it...

"You dont write down your rhymes? Well it sounds like it" -Treach

This, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I can tell that people like JayZ don't write their rhymes most of the time because of how basic their lines are at times.

Like JayZ will say, "Not D-O-C, but similar to the letters, no one can do it better etc." That shit is crazy basic and sounds like something someone would say in a freestyle.

... In contrast, you can tell people like Nas, Ghostface, and Pharoahe Monch write because the shit they say is too complex and too intricate to come off the head.

All in all, as long as it sounds good and you can piece together well, you're good.

B.I.G. was the only one who could pull this off effortlessly and successfully.

Jay's technique starting crumbling after American Gangster. The coke head hasn't sounded comprehensive in a verse since Tha Carter 2. When did Tity Boy (2 Chainz) EVER sound passable as an emcee?

Moral: WRITE the fucking verses. There's no prize for admitting you don't, and most successful emcees do.

man do yall honestly think these dumb ass rap niggas understand the context of that quote, i cant count how many times ive heard "i dont write i just go in the booth and record"(as in off the dome) ive never heard them allude to the fact that they write it in their head and then memorize it, except for the niggas who brought the concept to the table

imagine 2chainz in the studio drunk and high off dope and lean tryna construct and memorize his bars gtfoh det nigga just be sayin shit and you have to write it in your head in order to write the shit down on paper anyway so when these niggas say the shit what does it really mean? that they got excellent memorization skills, ya mixtape was still fugahgah nigga
