I'm gonna say Puffy, once he put rap on all those R and B beats, it crossed rap over. It was around the time of Life after death, and No Way Out that i felt rap hit it's peak as far as selling and mainstream appeal.

I will say Run DMC with Walk This Way Crossed Rap Over in a massive way with Aerosmith and the LL Cool J stayed inthe mainstream keeping rap a pop staple for years. All that said Def Jam did it...

Whiteboys these days....

Serious though....how you gonna tell me I'm wrong when I'm probably the only motherfucker who is A) outside of America B) not in the "hip hop demographic aka a minority"?

Hip Hop was "known" of worldwide and accepted by some, some rappers had fans worldwide yeah you right, rappers like Pac, Jay, Wu Tang, etc etc....

But when Em came, the biggest market in the world (white media) took notice and spread the message of hip hop worldwide into every single home....

Then Em pushed 50 the same way he got pushed by the media which inturn made Em's name even bigger and then the South took that and run with it and hip hop is where it's at today, which is everywhere you look, not just in terms of music either.....

Tell me I'm wrong...

Walk this way was cool, but white people never had their own dope single rapper before eminem(on the mainstream, That was good, don't say wackass vanilla ice) Beastie boys were a good group but they couldn't stand toe to toe with the best black rappers. Alot of people say walk this way brought whites to hip hop. BUT ALOtthe white people I know(I'm 18 so the be mindful of the demographic) were brought o hip hop through eminem. And alot of them are your typical "well I don't rap, but I like eminem" types. But most have evolved to listen to other rappers. IMO

Eminem gave them their own, there "hero"

IMO

sorry but you are wrong. the Demographic that you speak of is strictly considered fringe. Hip Hop was established and self sufficient on a world wid level when Run Dmc hit it's Peak. thats when everyone knew it was here to stay. they were selling out shows where ever they went! in the states and abroad. check out some of their tours during those times. They were setting and breaking all kinds of records world wide.
