Probably say We Belong Together by Mariah Carey.

But I guess it depends on what you mean by "true mainstream R&B"

She Got Her Own? I...guess? It was kinda big in the R&B world only...sort of?

We Belong Together however was a purely R&B song that was HUGE across the board. The last of a dying breed.

i can agree with that. but at the same time, when was the last time Mariah was looked at like an r&b singer?

I think she has always been looked at as a POPular R&B singer.

i ont know man, i think "she got her own" came out in 08 and we belong together came out in 05...

Yea, I wouldnt consider "SGHO" as a "mainstream" R&B success. It was an R&B song that was only really semi big in the R&B world. Plus it had a Hip-Hop featured artist.

..."Be Without You" by Mary J. Blige would another one. Huge huge megahit that was purely R&B. Also 2005.

hmm, i think the year 2000 was probably the last year that true talented r&b music died, but that's just my humble opinion

it sounds like the phrase "mainstream" is code for What Black folks under 30 are listening too and not the reality of how all artist under the R&B umbrella are charting!

Jill Scott has released 4 albums. the first one went PLATINUM the last 2 went gold and the current album debuted at #1 on the pop chart moving 125,000 the first week and its close to gold status now too. Maxwell Black Summers Night debuted at #1 on the pop charts too.. And thats not the R&B chart thats POP.. everybody! and hes released 4 albums ALL PLATINUM!!

these type of artist are going gold and platinum in an era where no one is selling records and Name rappers are getting there projects shelved or pushed back from fear of a flop from there label!! but the artist like Max and Jill get labeled NEO SOUL by under 30 crowd and the conversation goes nowhere!

For sake of arguments.. heres some stuff..

2005 - Mary J Blige - Be Without #3 pop #1 R&B

2005- Mariah - We Belong Together.. #1 pop #1 R&B

2007 - Chris Brown - With You #2 pop #5 R&B

2009 - Maxwell - Pretty Wings. #33 pop #1 R&B

2009 - Maxwell - Bad Habit #74 pop #4 R&B

I guess music is forever segarated by AGE these days and we dont have the true cross over star that unites old and young..

Lauryn Hill couldve been it but she went crazy

Dangelo couldve been it but he went crazy

R Kelly is now in his 40's and forever tainted by Scandal

Chris Brown couldve been it but post Riahanna beat down he became the bad guy and embraced the image and appealed to younger and lost any older following!

nigga i will stab you in the face, fuck outta here talmbout Frank Ocean. that shit aint singing... he talkin and stretching his words out...

I will dislocate your arm like Nogueira nigga. Frank Ocean is the future of RnB and he way better than every fake ass copy before him . T-Pain , The Dream , Tyrese and whoever else tried to do RnB in the 00's were as disposable as garbage.
