It makes sense when you think about it and I pointed it out way back. He was in that coma for like a month right. There's no one to look after him and Shane just barricaded him in so the walkers couldn't get to hm.mhe was in a coma long enough to grow a full beard when he woke up.i bet when he wakes up out if the coma the outbreak happens for real.
