VH1's Top 10 Hip Hop Artist:

#1. Jay Z

#2. Public Enemy

#3. Biggie

#4. Tupac

#5. Run DMC

#6. Eminem

#7. N.W.A.

#8. Beastie Boys

#9. LL Cool J

#10. Outkast

I would change some placements but that is not a horrible list at all. Also people remember, it's a list for every genre. They talking about Tupac right now.

Agreed. With that top 100 list, it's not the musicians listed, it's some of the positions/placements on the list. I was watching this on t.v. and changed the channel after I saw some of the people that were higher up on the list than The Doors, Curtis Mayfield, Sly & the Family Stone, and Black Sabbath. I guess influence on music was not a factor when placing some of these groups. And I know they can't please everyone, but get some commentary from musicians other than Sebastian Bach and DMC. These clowns basically jocked everybody on that list. When you call every group they ask you about, your favorite group or the best group ever, it tends to lose its sincerity.

Like i said he was a entertainer not an artist when people emulate mj its either his dance moves or his music videos which he neither chereograph or directed they never try emulate his music like they do with bob dylan and the beatles who set music standards they just dont compare anybody to the beatles or bob dylan because no one can ever do what they have done but people compare shitty acts like jt chris brown and usher to mj

How can you say MJ was not an "Artist"? MJ was the 100% total package. You right people emulate his dance moves, last I check, dancing was an artform. People emulate his vocal styles and production styles. He's one of the most influenial artist of all time. He won ever award imagable for an artist. He was named artist of the century. He won a Grammy Legend award by his 35 Birthday. 45 year career of nothing but classic albums and songs. MJ is better than Bob Dylan to me. Beatles, he's going up against a group but with Jackson 5 and his solo career as well as outshinning Paul Macartney on every track they did, Michael Jackson is better than the Beatles. They have more overall hits, Classic albums are about even. "Thriller" though Paul was on it, is the Biggest album of all time. Nobody can take that away from Michael. There's a reason you can go to any country in the world and they have that album. Sales don't mean everything but tell me who's going to sell 110 Million albums of 1 cd ever again?.

And Michael Jackson owned them all.
He bought The Beatles catalog, so everytime someone bought a Beatle album, Mike got paid for it, everytime u heard a Beatle song on a commercial, Mike got paid for it.

lol at Micheal Jackson not an artist, but I can understand having the beatles 1. Niggaz had classics for days, even though there's alot of people who were individually better then everyone in the group

And he was broke at the end of his career

That's what u think, Mike had money put away that they found out about after he died, dude was just in debt not broke.
He was making his money from the investment of The Beatles catalog, rappers sampling his music, his cd's was still being bought, The Wiz movie became a cult classic and people was buying the movie all the way up until now, Moonwalker is still being bought, he was still making money, just was spending it faster then he made it.
Guess what he was spending it on, charities, security, lawyers and art. He still was making alot of money and after he died, his debt was paid from the sells of his cd's after his death.

Now before I even post the list, VH1 doesn't really have any creditibility on Hip Hop cause they use to not even play rap videos. A matter of fact they use to have a policy that stated they will no play rap videos. Well after the Viacom buyout, and the success of all there rap documentaries and rap reality shows all they sudden in the last 4 or 5 years they've had a change of heart. Well right now they are playing what they consider the greatest artist in all genre's. Only a few rappers made it, do you agree with the list, check it out:

100 Alicia Keys

99 Hall & Oates

98 Depeche Mode

97 Pretenders

96 Journey

95 OutKast

94 Mariah Carey

93 Pearl Jam

92 LL Cool J

91 Green Day

90 Elvis Costello

89 Beastie Boys

88 Bee Gees

87 George Michael

86 N.W.A.

85 The Band

84 Curtis Mayfield

83 Earth, Wind and Fire

82 Steely Dan

81 ABBA

80 Mary J. Blige

79 Eminem

78 Judas Priest

77 Lynyrd Skynyrd

76 Run-D.M.C.

75 Rush

74 The Cure

73 Van Morrison

72 Janis Joplin

71 R.E.M.

70 Def Leppard

69 Tupac Shakur

68 Otis Redding

67 Coldplay

66 Justin Timberlake

65 The Doors

64 Talking Heads

63 Notorious B.I.G.

62 Genesis

61 Cream

60 Whitney Houston

59 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

58 Cheap Trick

57 Iggy & The Stooges

56 KISS

55 Peter Gabriel

54 Public Enemy

53 Little Richard

47 Jay-Z

46 Ramones

45 Al Green

44 Joni Mitchell

43 Ray Charles

42 Metallica

41 Van Halen

40 The Police

39 The Kinks

38 Sly & The Family Stone

37 Fleetwood Mac

36 Paul McCartney

35 Johnny Cash

34 Tina Turner

33 Guns N’ Roses

32 Black Sabbath

31 John Lennon

30 Aerosmith

29 Radiohead

28 Elton John

27 Aretha Franklin

26 Neil Young

24 The Velvet Underground

25 Chuck Berry

23 AC/DC

22 The Clash

21 Bruce Springsteen

20 Marvin Gaye

19 U2

18 Pink Floyd

17 Queen

16 Madonna

15 The Beach Boys

14 Nirvana

13 The Who

12 David Bowie

11 Bob Marley

10 Stevie Wonder

09 James Brown

08 Elvis Presley

07 Prince

06 Jimi Hendrix

05 Rolling Stones

04 Led Zeppelin

03 Michael Jackson

02 Bob Dylan

01 The Beatles

Interesting Placement for the Rappers, I guess these will probably be the groups and emcee that Pop Culture elevates from a Hip Hop Standpoint. SMH @ MJJ not being #1, they might as well stop frontin, everyone knows Michael Jackson will be considered the GOAT on everyone's list in the future. Beatles and Bob Dylan are legends no doubt but MJJ is the GOAT.

I'm watching this now, Bob Dylan is listed at 5, not 2; Rolling Stones at 4, not 5; Led Zeppelin at 3, not 4 and Michael Jackson at 2, not 3

In any case, the top artists are The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Elvis in any order.

I don't even see how any other artists can possibly claim to be greater than those three. They were more than musicians, they changed the landscape of the recording industry and popular music around the world. Not a Elvis fan, but him at #8 is laughable.

i'm kinda surprised they placed Prince that high. MJ will always be number in my book.

Well that's better, I took the list from a website before the full listing was released. And for the people dissin Bob Dylan, obviously they've never heard his music either. The bottom line is MJ and the Beatles need to be in everyone's Top 2 if you look at everything that everyone brought to the table.

This list wasn't objective. Michael Jackson shouldn't have been so high on the list, neither should he have come before James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, etc.

James Brown I can agree with but, Jimi Hendrix and Prince shouldn't be higher then Mike.
I am a fan of all four but, James is the one that birth Mike and Prince and Jimi helped birth Prince as well.
I would have it James Brown, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and Prince.

WTF, no Sam Cooke?

How in the fuck do they put The Bealtes, then put Paul McCartney and John Lenon as individual artist. That makes no fucking sense and you cannot tell me Lenon is a more accomplished artist than Sam Cooke.

True, that has to be one of the biggest head scratchers of all time Sam Cooke is in my top ten.. Saying John lennon wasn't more of accomplished artist then Sam Cooke is a little far fetched.. I would say it's pretty even
