everybody is broke until they make thier first check ... the average working american gets paid every 2 weeks ... so when most people get a job they are broke for the first month until they get that first pay check ... musicians get what they call an advance ... which is mainly to help you live until your first pay check comes ... which has no date, unless you were smart enuff to negotiate it ... but it has no date ... you get your first pay check after you recoup whatever that advance was including traveling, marketing & promo and any other misc fees ... once thats all paid back ... then you will start to get a kick back .... and unless you are an eminem or jayz type artist who can go gold in a month ... that first pay check could take for up to a year ............................................... which is why business savy artist tour alot and sell merchandise ... cause that is right now $$$$ while they are waiting on royalties and advance recoup

As someone who worked at a label n still works in this business this is all true. All the guys signed now get 360 deals mostly n some have enough independent success 2 negotiate 2 get raped less but they all getting fucked cuz they not getting what their worth 2 the label. U wanna be major u grind independent till they can't come to u half assed. U basically gotta force them to be capital investors in a way rather than working 4 them, which is what most guys do. The 360 works if only if u r a superstar already so u take no risks with ur money. If u coming into it ur fucked unless u can recoup n there's no way around it. I don't wanna get 2 deep but dude's rapping if they don't work real hard n have multiple successful records, they make high 5 figures to low 6 figures on a label. Then they get dropped. The label could lose here n there cuz, that's the nature of things, but they all got cash cows 2 rely on yearly.
