Traveling While Black: What You Need to Know

When I went to Koln, Germany as a youngster, I remember feeling like everyone was looking at me, my sister, mom and her friends cause we were 4 black people with one white lady traveling with us. I remember a guy even started following us but luckily are hotel came up pretty quick from the train station...

I dont recall feeling any "racist eyes" in any of the other countries we went durin that trip which were France, Belgium, Amsterdam, and England.

Also been to Mexico, DR, Panama, and never felt that, but these are brown people so its not an issue.

Funny, the worst i've been treated was in my native Georgia, and in Gainsville, FL where this inbred look gas station chick was like "I aint never seen your type around these parts." I dont think she was hatin, she was more interested, but I remember feeling like we should probably get out of here quick after we had stopped at Taco Bell and got them hateful cracker stares

traveling while being a black man...is a whole different experience

As opposed toooo when you travel as a white man?

I mean i get what you're saying but...how would you knw what it 'feels' like to travel as anything other than yourself. I've never in any way felt any different when i travel overseas or domestically to all white popluations (Denver, Boston, etc)

Do they make you carry your own bags, do they stop and frisk you. I dont get it

Its a self-fulfilling prophesy. If you feel all eyes are on you, then you gon act accordingly. For me traveling is liberaing bc you dont have to answer to anyone and you dont know anyone. So I gotta agree w/ the troll dude above me. Nggas stay playin the victim.

The only experience I had with this is when I went to Dubai this white lady saw me and darted in the mall with her kid like, "OMG here he comes!"

But that was the only thing that felt different.

And there is a LOT of interest and curiosity from people when you visit their country. I think it's kinda cool that they'll actually ask questions instead of assume. Eventhough this one cab me and my friends got into the cab driver was like, "WHAT YOU WANT LISTEN TO?! TUPAC RIGHT?! I HAVE TUPAC!" Then he popped in a cassette tape with West Coast music.

LOL

Everytime I hear a black person say something similar to 'I didn't really think race played such a huge part in such and such!', I always think the same thing:

What planet you been living on?

Anyway, yeah I can relate to this shit. I was in China few years back and the stories I could tell about just being a black man in China are crazy. And I'm heading to Thailand in May. Less of an oddity there, but I'm sure it'll still be crazy.

Nah, this aint that though.

An example of that type of unavoidable racial aspect is applying for a job, or interacting with someone at work, etc. Even if they're not a cold racist, you have to overcome stigmas and stereotypes rather than being judged as you are. Get all that

With traveling?? Aint nobody in a position to touch anything you doin, whats the bytchin about?? Did they deny you a room you paid for. Did they not let you jetski. Were you followed? What you worrying about people lookin at you for. As log as they dont touch me or block what im doin im good. Great, even. Specially if im on vacation i couldnt imagine walkin out the hotel thinkin bout race. Some people carry bein black like its dead weight, like you ALWAYS gotta overcome some shyt. Naaaah, its a blessing, hold yo head high nucca. Yall scary asses man lol

I've been to Thailand, Philipines, Guam, Saipan, most of the Caribbean, Alaska, etc. I haven't been to Europe yet nor the motherland. I will be going to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji for my vacation and the next vacation will be Africa.

How was Thailand, my G? I'm flying out to Bangkok in May. Gonna spend a couple days there, then head down to either Phuket or Krabi; haven't decided yet. Thinking about hopping a plan to Hanoi, too. And how was the Philippines?

But I'm saying though, it ain't always like that. People DO touch you sometimes. The article mentioned people randomly touching her hair without asking. When I was in China, this lady from the muslim region of China (that's a thing. Strange, right?) in the mountains started randomly rubbing my sisters arm. She thought she was wearing some kind of body paint and the color was just gonna come off.

Like I get what you mean, but sometimes in other countries that shit be deeper than rap, bro. Lol.

but most other places....people think i am up to something, about to steal something or famous.

my wife and I are always the only two blacks people.

and i hate when we see other blacks ...they look at us like WTF you doing here....

Its been quite the opposite for me, when in nations that have very few black ppl damn near all of them made a beeline to me or i did it to them and we chopped it up on some black shit. Or at least the non verbal wats up gestures. Blk Ppl went out tgeir way to acknowledge me Half the time we didnt speak the same language, buut Fuck it, wat up nigga! Lol

Its crazy..finding yourself in a sea of white ppl at one point can eitger make you blacker than ever........or whiter than ever

Real Question ~ Do you get looked at / touched / whatever if you're light(er)skinned? If I've been out in the sun I'm brown, but most of the year I'm a bit fairer..

Thailand is cheap as fuck. You literally could ball for a weekend on a 100 bucks. Philipina women, you already know what the deal is. I had a great time. Great food, good people, etc.

Thats the hotspot of many kiwi men when I was in New Zealand, I believe most go for the ladyboys, as its a transexual hotspot.

Indeed, Thailand is the destination of choice for lady boy lovers and pedophiles.

According to usmarine, it's a fantastic time.
