Way I learned is similar to your definition. Its basically a black guy who views himself above black society and attempts to verify this and "prove" it by association with white people as if they are the ultimate authority. But it's white who came up with the term because this so-called "elevated" black guy was basically making a fool of himself because he was just a black guy who "didn't know his place"
