You need to go listen to the catalogs of Kool G Rap, Rakim, KRS, Big Daddy Kane, and then you'll understand his point

ain't no need to
that shit is so dated its fossilized
i was listenin to 'the bridge is over' the other day on xm radio

I'm willing to argue for today's MC's...

the only 80's rapper that's fucking with guys like canibus, Lupe, eminem, mos def type dudes lyrically is rakim

Crooked I is right in what he said, there are alot of 80s era MCs that could keep up with these cats are LL, G.Rap, Kane, Rakim, Tribe Called Quest, Slick Rick, MC Lyte, De La Soul, Cube

There are too many 90s era cats that>>>>>>>>>The newer school MCs.

With that said there are quite a few 2003-present cats who are putting in work, Kanye, Little Brother, Lupe, Jay Elec, Blu, Wiz Khalifa. They could hang in any decade of hiphop.

i personally think slaughterhouse would murk every 80s rapper named

every 90s rapper as well
you can sit there with your emotions and memories and all that

i'm just usin them as an example
a nigga can't tell me biggie is LYRICALLY fuckin with lupe
you can't tell me that big daddy kane would murk nas on a song, in a battle, hell anywhere
eminem shits on krs

not to say it wasn't golden
but niggas have progressed

Slick Rick is still the best storyteller

Its hard to compare unless u lived thru it. I can say it was, for me, the best in music...

Trying to compare the decades isn't really fair.

kane, krs, Rakim, PE, Poor Rigetious teachers... just too many to name...

All had an influence.

And 98% of their raps did not contain foul language- fact.

So while yall debate this, I'll sit back and enjoy what the 80s hip hop meant to me.

At least in the 90's the talented MC's were getting shine and the wackness was either NOT taken serious or was never put on to begin with. Now below average MC's are considered "lyrical" and half ass albums from rappers who use their beats as a crutch get labeled "classic". There are some artist from this past decade that can hang with the 90's cats (Eminem, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks, Lupe) but for the most part none of these new niggas can touch those 90's rappers.

I actually cosign all of this except for the Ross part. But yea, just because a rapper was a "pioneer" doesnt mean he was one of the best. It does make him a legend though. But thats it.

Your average MC back in the day is probably better than the average MC today. Thats mostly because we got a lot of niggas in hiphop nowdays that shouldnt even be rapping. This is mostly due to the mainstream success of rap and its merge with pop music. (all you need is a fruity loops beat and a new dance routine to make it big)

But the greats of today shit on the greats of yesterday. After all they learned from "the best" right?

Are we talking pure raw rhyming or song making? Because I would give the edge to Nas, Jay, Kanye and Em in that regard, but if we're talking pure rhyming then G Rap would out rap many people in this era and not to mention he could out perform many on the stage as well. Smh at mentioning Wayne.
