Supporters rally behind Peter Liang, cop convicted in Akai Gurley’s shooting death

Peter Liang, the NYPD cop convicted of shooting and killing an unarmed man in a Brooklyn housing project stairwell, was a “scapegoat” who was the victim of “selective justice,” supporters declared Saturday.

More than 2,000 supporters — most Chinese American, like Liang — showed up at Cadman Plaza Park at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday to rally behind the convicted cop.

"He cannot be a scapegoat for the police department,” said protestor Carin Lin, 59. “It was an accident!”

Supporters carrying signs reading “Justice Not Revenge” said Liang, 28, was a pawn who got caught up in politics thanks to City Hall’s anti-police sentiment.

Liang and his partner, Officer Shawn Landau, were in a dark stairwell at the Pink Houses when Liang fired his gun and hit Gurley on Nov. 20, 2014.

Liang was convicted Feb. 11 and faces up to 15 years in prison when he’s sentenced April 14.

He’s the first NYPD cop to be convicted for a police-involved shooting in a decade.

Four months before Gurley, 28, was shot, Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo killed Staten Island father of six Eric Garner with a chokehold banned by the NYPD — but a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict him.

"(Liang’s) not the only one who killed a victim,” said Eddie Ng, 67. “Why do they pick on him but not other policemen?"

Supporters unhappy with the verdict have been making donations at the Lin Sing Association on Mott Street in Chinatown to help pay for Liang’s appeal.

Over one million Chinese-Americans in over 40 American cities were protesting Liang’s conviction Saturday, organizers said. Many believe the young cop was specifically targeted because he is Asian and a rookie.

"I don't want to say it's a racial thing, but obviously it's some kind of racial justice,” said 56-year-old Wing Ma. “It's not real justice."

“Usually I believe in the justice system of this country,” he added. “But not anymore.”

Thousands of people rallied in cities across the US on Saturday in support of Peter Liang, a NYPD officer convicted of manslaughter after shooting and killing an unarmed man in a New York stairwell.

Organizers claimed that tens of thousands of people took part in protests in 30 US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC. Crowds gathered to express support for Liang and to argue that he is the victim of a racist, politically motivated prosecution.

Liang was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter by a Kings County jury on 11 February and faces as much as 15 years in prison. The 28-year-old was prosecuted over the death of Akai Gurley in November 2014, and was fired by the NYPD following the ruling.

During a patrol of a public housing building in Brooklyn with his partner Shaun Landau, Liang testified that he was startled by a noise and his gun “just went off”. The bullet ricocheted off a wall and hit Gurley in the chest as he was walking down the stairwell.

Liang’s defense argued that the incident was a tragic accident but the prosecution maintained that the officer was reckless, and that Liang compounded the incident by failing to perform CPR on the dying Gurley.

Saturday’s rally in New York was dominated by the Chinese American community, of which Liang is a part, along with current and former police officers who have warned the case will have a “chilling effect” on their ability to do their jobs.

In Brooklyn, thousands of people waved American flags, held signs calling Liang a “scapegoat” and demanded his freedom. A message from Liang was read out in which he thanked his supporters while expressing condolences over Gurley’s death.

Speakers at the rallies expressed sorrow over Gurley’s death but said that Liang was picked out for prosecution to satisfy political concerns over the death of black people due to police actions. A Facebook page in support of Liang noted that he was prosecuted while officers involved in the deaths of other black men, namely Eric Garner and Michael Brown, have walked free.

Leaflets distributed at the Brooklyn rally claim that the case is a “tragedy for both families” and that Liang was misrepresented by the media.

“His subtle expression of remorse, due to his Chinese background, was misportrayed as being unsympathetic,” the leaflets read.

Jack Ouyang, spokesman for the Coalition of Justice for Liang, said the officer was unfairly targeted.
“In the wake of so many unfortunate deaths of unarmed African American men in the hands of police officers,” Ouyang said, “the tension between the police and African American communities nationwide has reached an unprecedented level. However, it is totally wrong for the prosecutor to single out Mr Liang.”

Don Lee, a candidate for the New York assembly, described Liang as “a sacrificial lamb from a community that has for too long fallen victim to the system”.

Liang’s conviction “does not give comfort that we are heading toward a serious discussion of reforming our policing policy and our criminal justice system”, Lee added. “The notion that we’ve solved the policing problem by convicting a single individual is a harmful one.”

Melissa Butler, who attempted to save Gurley after he was shot by Liang, has filed a $200,000 lawsuit against Liang and the City of New York over the death. Butler, who was with Gurley at the time of the shooting, claims that the city was negligent in hiring Liang and Landau and that she was left to tend to Gurley alone without the officers’ help.

Peter Liang, convicted NYPD officer, supporters see rally disrupted

Black Lives Matter activists on Saturday disrupted a Brooklyn rally supporting a rookie Chinese-American NYPD officer convicted of killing an unarmed man.

Disorder-control police stood shoulder to shoulder to separate the groups at Cadman Plaza as supporters of each shouted at each other and hoisted opposing placards.

“Accident Is Not a Felony,” a sign from one group read. The other’s stated, “Jail Killer Cops.”

After about 20 minutes of face-to-face protests, the groups separated, with Liang supporters filling much of Cadman Plaza Park and about a dozen people behind a Black Lives Matter banner counter-demonstrating from a traffic island facing the plaza.

At one point, the two sides chanted in unison, shouting “all lives matter,” to which the smaller group added, “All lives will matter — when black lives matter.”

Let them have their say. I doubt the conviction will be overturned as a result. Everybody sees things from different angles. Shrugs.

Why are black people in NYC are still patronizing these muthafuckas restaurants, nail and hair salons? This is an another example of of the sick ass parasitic relationship that black people have with other groups. Like Tariq Nasheed says we need a code and the code that needs to be implemented in this case is not to patronize their businesses for a quarter or two. A few of these slope eyed muthafuckas need to lose their livelihood behind this disrespect and fuckery.

I can't be upset with the Chinese because, they are defending one of their own. However they just cannot make the connection that they are upholding white supremacy, racism and police brutality. This is their opportunity to stand in solidarity with Blacks but they are siding with whites and their system. Sad, state of affairs.

Their whole reasoning is flawed. but they are idiots to think that they would have the privilege that whites have no matter what they do for a living. I am disgusted that they are ignoring the life that was lost due to the chink pig's negligence. Someone in the article said it was an accident, well accident have consequences and cops should be held accountable too. The only part the got right is that "white" cops should be in prison when they shoot someone intentionally even though they were not a threat.

This is illogical. Just because someone is your own, doesnt mean you blindly defend them. Thats like saying we should defend OJ or R Kelly just because they are black.

We become just like them if we agree with this type of thinking. But I agree we need to support our own businesses and stop giving to those who clearly think of us as lesser human beings.

It seems like the BLM movement has lost it's way. Shit like this is stupid and accomplishes nothing. Like they really going at a group that has less political power than us? For what. They may be wrong, but protesting their protest accomplishes nothing.
