well the truth is, is that the way white people used to try to emulate the culture was EXTREMLY stupid
I mean even the beastie boys, who were respected had to maintain a very self parody style image as well as the fact they were rock and roll artists which made them a lot easier to accept as musicians, everyone white after that was a bit of a case
MC serch was part of a group which mad it easier for him to blend in, not a particulariy good or bad rapper, he went largley unnoticed in 3rd base which werent that big anyway
Vanilla Ice was a corny one hit wonder who lied about his past which made white rappers even harder to take seriousl and set a stereotype for all white kids as wannabes who were essentailly emulating the culture in a dishonest way
then afterwards the level of corny was too much, Snow had his little one hit wonder, but as a canadian putting on a carribean accent it just sounded silly, which is a shame because he had a little talent. Then you had Marky Mark and that kid from that show Greene or something doing silly shit, which made them clowns in the eyes of all hip hop fans
in short they werent doing hip hop any favours
Eminem changed all that, he is generally a unique artist, he was like nobody out, at this time the undergound scene had people like ICP and Cage making a little buzz but this stayed underground, eminem had a creative, experimental and outrageous style which just made him stand out so much, and he BLEW UP like crazy. He was just so skilled, and so contreversial for so many different reasons he got noticed and then people heard his music.
Now some may think that this 'opened the door' for white rappers, well it did and it didint
Bubba Sparxxx and Stagga Lee dropped around this time, white rappers, very genuine in thier own right, but they werent eminem, apart from being white they didnt STAND OUT at all, they were decent rappers but it wasnt enough to just be white, they were just rapping like thier fave black rappers and never really impacted at alll
fastforward a little bit and the same was with pall waul, no real identity just a big deep voice and some shiny teeth
most people didnt even know he was white till they saw him, he was in nobodys face, its like these white rappers were trying so hard not to be corny, moronic assholes like vanilla ice they just stayed TOO humble, and never really pushed for thier own individuality, so they floated for a while and then they sank.
K-Fed was also already a joke in the media so when he dropped with his stupid style white rappers took another step back
Asher roth was doing his own thing but he ultimatley was a one hit wonder, even though he had a lot of skill his music is just too hippy to actually capture a fanbase that were only really intested in frat boy stuff, just like paul he floated and sank
Yelawolf, made the difference, when the trunk music dropped, he had the high fierce delivery, and the country psycho roots and the rock and roll image hairsyle and tattoos, Yelawolf wasnt trying to sell being white or trying to sell acting black he was just himself, and he was DIFFERENT stood out like a sore thumb among southern rappers and among white rappers plus he was very very good. He was compared to eminem but he easily stands out on his own as an artist.
and now it seems that yelawolf set the bar for white rappers, white rappers arent trying to be 'white' (see rap metal) or 'black' (see chet haze)
they are accepting that they only have a chance if they be themselves and its fucking working
Mac Miller is completley accepted in his own right, just a young relaxed kid with a lot of skill, no gimmicks just good rap
MackleMore is surging like crazy bringin the concious underground rap to a casual audeice that will appreciate it
Outasight and Sam Adams: are also very mainstream acciseible but as coherant rappers, no cheese just music and confidence
The basis of this is, race isnt enough to make impact in hip hop anymore, the shock value of being white or the fact that its a black genre of music has worn off. its 2012 anyone can rap, so now, if you want to be noticed you have to STAND OUT with YOUR STYLE and MUSIC and no one is checking for wackness no more, the future of hip hop have TALENT (big krit j cole kendrick lamar mac miller hopsin yelawof big sean french montana stalley)
Gucci and waka were the last succesful wack rappers but there will be no more from now on.
