Rappers cannot get away with because the talks in rap back then the rules were you don't bite, and you have to write your own shit, or you were not considered a real mc and were not respected by your peers. If it were found out that you didn't write, you had to show and prove or risked being exiled.

Of course there were some shorts writing other people's shit. Big Daddy Kane wrote for Bid Markie and Roxanne Shante, and they are considered Entertainers not authentic rappers.
